Marshland off mark with first league win
Division One
Hatfield Woodhouse 0, Victoria Rangers 3
After a couple of weeks of cup-tie football, it was back to the bread and butter of Division One action for both sides and the champions emerged winners comfortably at Hatfield on Sunday morning.
Woodhouse managed to hold Rangers in a goalless first half, who missed several good chances.
However, the pressure told in the second half and Rangers took the lead on the hour with Gareth Welsh's first goal for the club as he was in the right place to slot home a free kick from Andy Gill.
Jason Gibbon made it two ten minutes later, running on to a through ball by Gill, and the same provider was at the heart of the third a minute later, with substitute Ryan Mitchell netting with his first touch of the ball.
A deserved victory for Rangers following a good display,
The Mansfield Berwery Man of the Match award went jointly to Jon Newton and Gareth Welsh.
Marshland Wanderers 1, White Hart 0
It has been a long time coming, but finally Marshland Wanderers got the monkey off their back on Sunday with a first league win of the Goole and District Sunday League campaign.
A marvellous defensive display from Ramsker, Drayton, Philpott and captain Wattam with Brown turning in a Man of the Match performance in goal kept a well organised White Hart at bay.
Without five key players due to other commitments, Wanderers knew expectations were low, but they held their own in the first 45 minutes and almost took the lead through Nicholson and Thompson.
White Hart looked stronger in the opening stages of the second half, but Brown was in tip-top form and it looked as though it would be stalemate until a couple of Marshland substitutions did the trick with Nicholls providing the perfect pass for Martin to score with four minutes to go.
NUR 1, Thorne Demi 3
This top of the table clash produced good fare for the local supporters who turned up on a chilly Sunday morning.
The home side made a positive start, looking the more dangerous for most of the first 45 minutes as it turned out using the wind to their advantage.
And yet for all their good football it was Demi who took the lead with ten minutes of the first half remaining; a cross came in from the right only half-cleared, enabling the striker to pounce.
The home side produced more fine football after the break and Nat Braithwaite saw a 25-yard free kick clear the bar by inches. Beattie was brought down in the area but appeals were waved away and a curling cross from Burnitt beat all the defenders and Potter saw his shot go over the bar.
With the home side chasing the game little gaps appeared and a poor shot from inside the penalty area saw the back of the net, with the keeper's vision blocked by his own defender.
The home side were reduced to 10 men after a dreadful challenge on the player manager, who had to be carried off and, with all the substitutes used, they faced a mountain to climb, but they spurred themselves on and reduced the arrears when Beattie was brought down in the box and Swan cooly slotted home the penalty.
With three minutes left, Thorne sealed the game with a fine run from the centre forward and he finished with an excellent shot.
Rawcliffe United 0, Old Goole Veterans 1
After a fortnight's break, Old Goole Veterans returned to league action at Rawcliffe on Sunday and also marked the return of captain Gary Noon after injury.
Despite Noon's return, the 'Vets' still had several personnel out for various reasons.
There was a bright opening from both sides, but clear cut chances were few and far between against two well-organised defences.
The visitors just had the better of the exchanges, but it was goalless at the break.
The breakthrough came on the hour mark when Dale Noon chased down what looked a lost cause, robbed the defender of the ball and supplied Andy Lazenby with the opportunity to score from close range.
And then the 'Vets' survived a nervy last quarter with their stand-in keeper making one or two fine saves to preserve the three points.
Division Two
Rising Sun 4, Victoria Hotel 4
The first half saw both teams start cautiously and it was the Vic. who came close first when Phil Gray forced the keeper to make a fine save with Troy Oldridge narrowly missing the rebound.
It was the home side's turn next when some slack marking let their striker through one on one, forcing Dave South to produce a reaction save.
As the game started to flow the breakthrough came when Oldridge towered above the keeper and fired a bullet header into the top corner. However, from the restart a goalkeeping error allowed the Rising Sun to draw level.
The second half was a much more open affair, with both sides creating chances and the home side took the lead somewhat controversially when the striker seemed to kick the ball out of the keepers hands before slotting home.
It wasn't long before the Vic. equalised when Liam Smith's hard work earned him his second goal in two games. The away side started to pile on the pressure and Phil Gray gave them the lead with 15 minutes to go however a controversial penalty was awarded to the home side after Stuart Cutter was deemed to be holding on to his man, the resulting penalty was coolly slotted home, even with the keeper going the right way.
With five minutes remaining, the home side thought they had won the match when their best spell of the game resulted in a well worked goal, however the Vic., never knowing when they are beaten ,produced an equally good move when Oldridge and Gray combined to put the ball into the box were Cutter controlled the ball superbly before smashing the ball home.
A magnificent game for both teams and a fair outcome in the end.
Buchanan 1, Canal Tavern 7
The Canal Tavern climbed to the top of the table with an emphatic win over nearest rivals Buchanan of Goole at West Park.
On a blustery morning the Tavern made their usual start with a brilliant header from Adam Atkinson after only three minutes and continued to dominate as Lee Pearson was put through by Sean McCarthy after 15 minutes to rifle home into the top corner.
The Buchanan lads rallied with the wind behind their backs to make the score 2-1 after a dreadful mistake at the back, but after 35 minutes the Tavern were back on top after ex 'X Factor' star Daz Brown lobbed the goalkeeper only to see Sean McCarthy claimed the goal as he tapped it in on the line.
After the break the pairing of Neil Marshall and Mark Storrs at the back never gave the Buchanan lads a sniff as Storrs put through Pearson who fed Brown and that made it 4 - 1.
The Tavern were now comfortable, as again Jed McCormack fed the goat and Browny put it away again.
Within a minute the Buchanan lads were all over the place as John Freeborn, who had controlled the midfield from start to finish, slipped a delicate pass through to Daz Brown and he finished superbly for his hat-trick.
At 6-1 the game was nearly over until Adam Atkinson crossed to the edge of the box to see Liam Beaumont scream a 25-yarder past a bewildered keeper. Man of the match was John Freeborn (the Bangkok Express), who will be sorely missed for the next three months.
Thanks to sponsors Warren Roofing and Don Despatch.
Next Sunday they entertain Howden Minster at The Toll Bar, kick-off 10.30am, looking to maintain their excellent form in the first half of the Goole and District league season.
Green Dragon 2, Rawcliffe Bridge Club 0
Green Dragon moved into second place in the table, with a 2-0 victory over Rawcliffe Bridge Club.
In truth it wasn't the greatest of team performances by the Dragon, as they struggled to beak their lowly rivals down.
The Dragon's two goals came at the start of the second half, both courtesy of Ryan Stewart crosses. Dragon leading scorer Andy Bembridge converted the first and Glen Hookway was pushed attempting head home the second, and Dave Howe converted the resulting penalty.
