Thorne Town 3, AFC Charter 1

The holders foR the previous two seasons under the banner of the Old George will not make it three after the Charter made a shock exit from the Goole and Thorne Cup at Thorne Town on Saturday.

Despite taking the lead and dominating large segments of the cup tie, they pressed the self-destruct button in the closing ten minutes and went down by 3-1 against the Doncaster League side.

A scrappy contest overall had seen Andy Gill score the only goal of the first half, and as time went by it appeared that maybe enough had been done to see them through, but a lack of discipline at the back saw Thorne equalise and then go in front. As Charter searched for the equaliser themselves to force extra time, they were caught out once more at the back as the home side sealed their win.

All in all, not good preparation for the first 'derby' of the season against Viking Raiders at Western Road this weekend in what promises to be a full-blooded affair. The Charter in particular will be looking to rediscover the form that has deserted them slightly in recent weeks.

The kick off is 2pm and Charter players are asked to report for the earlier time of 12.45pm.

Thanks go to the Charter Club for their continued support, and to Peter Finch of Classic Cleaners. The players and management would also like to thank Pickard Butchers for after match refreshments.

Finally this Saturday sees the long awaited Stars in your Eyes bash at the Charter Club. A few tickets remain at £3 each, and a raffle on the night sees a top prize of £50, together with numerous other prizes.
