Newcastle Benfield 4

There have been enough embarrassing FA Cup exits in the past at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, so another to add to the list is merely for record purposes, but can someone tell the long suffering supporter of the town's local football club how their side can offer such a lame, weak willed shameful performance in losing at home to Newcastle Benfield at the first hurdle of this season's competition on Saturday.

It was an easy way for an opposition side, who were no great shakes themselves, but never had to be, to earn £1500 and put themselves into the first qualifying round and a home tie which could see them advance further, and they will definitely offer more than the Vikings did here, win, lose or draw.

To be truthful, the day was a totally humbling experience, and somehow, somewhere, the chairman and management have to lift the club out of the doldrums starting this Saturday against Leek Town, as if this is allowed to fester, it will be a longer, harder season than it looks to be already.

One should never mention cash sums when the Vikings are around, the two just don't go together, but there is no excuse for a side that has plenty of ability in it to surrender meekly to a hard working, but no world beateers, but who simply wanted it more.

They had five chances and scored four times, the Vikings huffed and puffed around the Benfield penalty area, but probably wouldn't have scored had then been playing today!

It may have been different had they capitalised on two great opportunities in the opening five minutes with Danny Buttle looking to convert with his foot, instead of what looked a far easier option to head home from James McDaid's cross.

And then McDaid himself fired wide when well placed after Karl Rose did well in the penalty area.

However, and they always seem to do so, the Vikings conceded a goal at the other end on 10 minutes when Lee Hamilton had time and space on the right hand side to audaciously lob the stranded Craig Parry.

And two minutes later, the visitors were two goals up with Michael Chilton scoring from close range with the Goole defence, including a clearly far from 100 per cent Nigel Danby, all over the place, having said that there was an element of offside about the build-up, although the assistant claimed afterwards that Craig Robinson was playing the Tynesiders on.

Goole had plenty of possession, but there seemed little motivation on the park, and although Karl Rose's aggression was pleasing to see in some ways, he could easily have been sent off had referee Cook seen him aim a punch at centre back Bangura.

The tie was as good as over before the break though when a defence splitting pass was in the path of Hamilton to drill past Parry for 3-0 to the Tynesiders, and the Pleasure Grounds was so quiet you could hear a pin drop - yes the supporters resigned to the fate with 45 minutes left.

A Jekyll and Hyde Vikings, so poor at Shepshed, so good at home to Retford had reverted to type and the second half was long and tedious in the extreme.

True, Goole dominated long spells of possession, but their playwas stereo-typed, and although homework had been done on Benfield by Nigel Danby, it was clear that the visitors had done theirs too with far more effect.

Substitutions were made on both sides, and it was Benfield's Steve Young who made it 4-0 midway through the half running on and beating Parry with comfort, and thankfully their shooting boots deserted them late in the game as half chances went, and the home supporters made for the exits.

Whether they come back or not will depend on the new faces that are expected to make their debuts this weekend - it will be make or break for the club, perhaps even the managament as they try to arrest their poor start.
