Sir -

This Bank Holiday weekend was the usual flurry of football for the town of Goole, with Goole A.F.C. playing two games in the Unibond League.

Unfortunately, those two games didn't go the way we Vikings supporters would have hoped, but my letter isn't about the fortunes on the pitch.

Bank Holiday Monday was the home game that was played at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, and although we lost the match it had everything that supporters of football up and down the land love to see.

There was well-taken goal, a scrambled goal and a controversial penalty. We had an end to end game with chances going begging from both sides, a good away following and even some guy from Retford with a drum which all helped to create a great atmosphere.

The only problem I could see was the number of local supporters who had decided to watch the game, which has consistently fallen over the past few seasons.

I am not a person to criticise the band of people that consistently populate the VPG but would like to see a few more people coming through the turnstiles to support their local club.

We are lucky that we have local people that are willing to put their time and energies into the running of the club, for without those people the town would not have a football team for any of us to watch, but if Goole AFC are to progress in this league and even challenge for promotion rights then the club will need the money that extra support will bring.

My hopes are that both local people, born and bred Goolies, will come to the ground and give the club a chance to provide their footballing entertainment and people new to the town will take a walk down Carter Street and find that supporting football at our level is an exciting adventure. There will be no better way to start your footballing viewing as this Saturday we start our 2008 F.A. Cup campaign at home to Newcastle Benfield.

I for one am looking forward to Saturday and hopefully a good crowd to support the Vikings and progression into the next round of the best club cup competition in the world.
