Abysmal Vikings sink to defeat

Andy Parton has scored twice in four games, but missed plenty too, here on Monday above and at Shepshed on Saturday.

Shepshed Dynamo 4

Goole AFC 2

This was only a first defeat of the season at Shepshed's Dovecote on Saturday, but in the cold light of day and for the sizeable following that travelled down the M1, the tell-tale signs of a long and painful season were there for all to see, unless urgent action is taken to correct a defence leaking goals at an alarming rate.

This, though, was about as poor a performance as it could get from Nigel Danby's side, who should not be losing to sides like Shepshed. They, for all their improvement from last term, are a long way from knocking at the door of promotion, but they still took the opportunity to rub the Vikings' noses in the Dovecote dirt with great effect.

The scoreline flattered Goole, especially as Andy Parton's goal and the Vikings' second came three minutes into added-on time at the end, and before that it could have been a whole lot worse.

The difference between the games with Kidsgrove and Lincoln were that in those 3-3 draws, at least the Vikings played their part in creating lots of chances to keep them in the game, but here there was noting in midfield and hence the front men worked off virtually next to nothing.

When rarely they did put anything of note together, they looked the part, but when a team has to score at least three to ensure a point given the early evidence - well, it just can't go on.

There was one change to the starting line-up, with Jason Blunt making his first appearance of the season in place of the injured Chris Kamara, and unfortunately the former Scarborough captain had a nightmare, one which seemed to manifest itself throughout.

The home side had made several summer captures, and looked sharp going forward in the first half, helped by questionable refereeing from Mr. Williams, whose consistency in his decision-making confused many.

It was the lack of a decision which gave the Dynamo the lead midway through the first half as he firstly ignored a blatant push on Chris Tate, and seconds later blew for a Danby foul on the touchline which earned the manager a caution, one of four in the match for Goole, and from the ensuing free kick Ian Robinson beat the unsighted Parry with a low shot from a partial clearance.

A left-wing corner by Norris on 37 minutes saw Millnes make it 2-0, and at that stage Goole looked down and out, but they had their best spell to the break, and pulled one back in clinical style as Danny Buttle's burst on the left touchline allowed Brad Hill to run on to his inviting cross and head home.

Any hopes of a second-half revival ended within 20 seconds of the restart as Shane Benjamin finished off a cross by Saunders after the home side broke immediately from the kick off, Goole once again susceptible straight after kick off where a lack of concentration can be the only factor.

And the second half largely belonged to Shepshed, who didn't have to play all that well to remain in control.

They could have added further goals, but were kept waiting until 78 minutes, when Parry did well to save from Norris' shot, but substitute Sam Saunders netted the rebound.

Goole's chances were few and far between, although Parton shot wide when put through by Karl Rose, before he eventually volleyed home a consolation in injury time.

Much to ponder, much to concern the management at the VPG, but first and foremost they have to tighten up at the back, and secondly put some smiles back into the camp, for at the moment everyone appears to be feeling sorry for themselves, and that is a sure recipe for disaster if allowed to continue.
