A bit rusty, but never in trouble
Goole Town 1st XI 176-7
Hull Zingari 122-8
The wheels haven't exactly come off Goole's first season in the Premier Division of the York Senior League, but a combination of reality setting in, bad weather and unavailability have seen results of late take a dip.
The bad weather has certainly hindered matters, practice has been virtually impossible some weeks and such were the conditions last week that Saturday's first of two home matches over the Bank Holiday weekend was washed out without a ball being bowled.
And it was only thanks to hard work by club officials that Monday's game with bottom club Zingari started on time.
A rusty performance on a low and slow wicket saw Goole make 176-7 after being asked to bat first. They made a cautious start, reaching 32 in 11 overs before Anthony Gibbins was bowled by Bunn for 20.
When Kevin Murphy and Neil Foster went cheaply, they were in a spot of bother, but Hulme with 33, an excellent 30 in Ben Earl's first-team debut and 46 from Lee Hayward steadied matters. A quickfire 23 from Steve Foster, in yet another first-team comeback, saw them to 176 in their allotted 50 overs.
Zingari's replay also started cautiously and they reached 35 in 11 overs before Ashley Hulme struck with the first of seven wickets in a 21-over marathon spell which saw him end with 7-51, a season's best. He could not quite force the win as he and Dave England tied the visitors in knots at times, with only Markham with 37 offering much in resistance.
The Hull side survived - just - amid the gathering gloom but it is plain to see why they are at the foot of the table and heading for Division One next season.
For Goole, they are without an outright win since July 5, but they reached 300 points for the season on Monday and that was always an initial target at the start of the season, which would guarantee survival - and it has, more than comfortably, with three matches to go.
