Goole AFC 3

Lincoln United 3

There is no shortage of excitement for Goole AFC, given the first two games of the UniBond League One season as they pulled the emotional heart strings of supporters at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds on Tuesday night.

After all the hoo-hah of the opening home game - fanfares, new shaking of hands before the game (respect, it is called!) (see below at Kidsgrove 21-08-05 SU) etc, etc - they found themselves two goals down inside ten minutes to a relegated Lincoln United side who had been beaten 4-1 at home in their first game on Saturday.

Former Grantham Town striker Sam Wilkinson, one of a number of ex-Gingerbread players at Ashby Avenue now, took advantage of sloppy play, Craig Parry at fault for the first and general blame attached for the second, and the atmosphere turned into a wake.

However, an unchanged side rolled their sleeves up, and if Andy Parton had been sharper on the night, he might have had a first-half hat-trick as an uneasy Vikings clung to the game, and were given a lifeline with a fine header from Chris Tate after 16 minutes.

The former Halifax striker looked in good form on Tuesday, and he was a handful most of the night, and although the visitors could have restored their two-goal cushion on occasions, Nigel Danby's side had to be happy to go in at the break at least in the match.

And a half-time substitution saw things improve even more after the break. Simon Hainsworth replaced Chris Kamara with Chris Jenkinson moving to right back, and it did look a better balance at the back, which enabled that same balance to extend further forward.

The equaliser came out of the blue on 55 minutes from full back Luke Jeffs, but yet another early contender for goal of the season.

He had wasted a free kick 35 yards out, but when Lincoln only partially cleared their lines, this time he went for goal with a sweetly-struck 30-yard volley which clearly surprised the otherwise excellent Mario Ziccardi in the visitors' goal.

Parity restored, like Saturday, it got even better when, on 61 minutes, another free kick on the right was met this time by Nigel Danby's header and the ball found its way through, apparently without assistance, although from the main stand, it appeared there was another touch.

Karl Rose replaced Parton, and it clearly rankled with the former iron striker, and although Rose did not make the impact he had on Saturday, his more muscular approach was clearly seen as a way of trying to hold play up, bringing others into the fare.

Unfortunately, the warning signs were there at the other end, and on 77 minutes, Lincoln equalised from a corner.

One corner was cleared with difficulty, but the Vikings were still at sixes and sevens as the ball fell to Ryan Porter from another and he beat Parry and defenders on the line.

After that few moments to determine either side taking the full points and the game rather petered out, which left more reflections on what might have been.

However, until the Vikings can stop conceding goals like spilling confetti, there has to more worry for everyone.

Double Bank Holiday

The Vikings face a trip to unbeaten Shepshed on Saturday, kick off 3pm and a home game with champions Retford on Monday afternoon, kick off 3pm.

That game has added spice with Duncan Bray's return just days after leaving for the Cannon Park side.

Retford, where money appears no object after the takeover of the club went through in the summer, apparently played well at Carlton last Saturday, but failed to break down a resolute Grantham on Tuesday night.

Manager Nigel Danby, disappointed with the way his side have thrown away winning positions so far, albeit they were two goals down on Tuesday after nine minutes, could include Nick Smith from Farsley in his squad as well as Jason Blunt.

Meanwhile Goole's FA Cup opponents are Newcastle Benfield Plain at the VPG on Saturday week.
