More than 200 people turned out for a Twenty-Twenty cricket tournament to celebrate the official opening of Sykehouse CC's new ground.

The event, which doubled as a family fun day, raised about £1,100 for the cricket club and Sykehouse Village Hall.

The money - which was split between the club and the village hall committee - was raised through alcohol sales at the club's licensed bar, a barbecue and raffles. There was also a bouncy castle for children.

On a rain-affected day Fishlake ran out winners of the Twenty-Twenty competition - in which each side bats 20 overs - after winning a close-fought final against Sykehouse X1. The four-team competition, which was accompanied by programmed music, also included a team representing the Hare and Hounds pub in Fishlake and the Sykehouse All Stars.

The official opening was carried out by club president Tony Burke, who presented chairman Pete Davies with a plaque commemorating the official opening.

The club has been playing on land next to Dymond Farm in Sykehouse over the past 14 years, before switching to its new ground on Broad Lane in time for the 2008 cricket season.

Lead is reduced with shock defeat

Drax 1st XI 98, Bishopthorpe 1st XI 100-3

Drax fell to only their second defeat of the season on a rain-affected pitch. Bishopthorpe won the toss and and elected to bowl on a surface that looked sure to offer assistance, owing to a portion of the wicket getting wet.

Holmes and Eckhart opened the bowling and were able to extract plenty of variation in bounce, although Harvey Thomas struck some fine shots in an innings of 17 before falling lbw to Holmes as Drax were reduced to 59-4.

Scott Sim and Dan Montgomery helped to steady the ship before falling Sim was bowled by Holmes for 16 and Montgomery was run out for a well-made 18.  The tail failed to get going and Drax were bowled out for 98 runs, with Ian Holmes finishing with 6-46.

The Bishopthorpe reply got off to a steady start and, with the pitch still offering help to bowlers, progress was slow and several shots went close to fielders as Brinded bowled a disciplined spell, although there were only a couple of clear-cut chances as Dale and Kelly put on 40 for the first wicket.

Brinded eventually got his reward as a sharp stumping by Kevin Thomas got the wicket of Kelly for 13 and Dale holed out to deep square leg off Paul Smith, who also got the wicket of Reeves.

Any hope of a dramatic fightback was ended by Graham, who struck some powerful shots in a quickfire 45 not out to bring Bishopthorpe home in the 26th over.

The result should reignite the battle for the York Vale Division One as Drax have had their advantage reduced.
