A second successive defeat for the Goole thirds on Sunday, and this time it was cup heartbreak in the final of the Premier Sports Cup at Hemingbrough Cricket Club, where they went down to York side Bishopthorpe seconds.

Far from ideal conditions, with the game in doubt after heavy rain overnight, and with a couple of stoppages during the game, added to the frustration of a below-par batting performance when they chased a total in excess of 151 to win.

Having said all that, the Bishopthorpe innings was indebted greatly to opener Smith, who cracked 77 and was the ninth man out on 143 as they looked to pile on as many runs as possible in the closing overs.

Only fellow opener Helliwell with 12 reached double figures, but once more the telling statistic was the extras column, totalling 27, 14 of which were wides.

Most of the bowlers were tidy, the experience of Mark Hinchcliffe seeing his ten over s go for just 16. He showed his cunning near the end, and young Scott Thorpe, (pictured, below left 21-08-12 GT) took 3-26 in his ten, and it would have been better if he could have negated the wides and odd no-ball.

The Goole reply never got going from the time they were reduced to 12-3 by Pilmoor's accuracy and control. When they did clear their heads, with Hinchcliffe making 20 and Thorpe battling away, Bishopthorpe had first change bowler Smith - yes, the same one who had made 77, to really run Goole's noses in the Hemingbrough soil.

He took 4-15, and was the Man of the Match, and although Louie Sugden and Scott Biggs tried to prolong things, the innings ended on 92 in the 32nd over of the allotted 40.

The early blow of losing in-form Danny Cooper and the experienced Chris Sugden and Dan Neal was the major factor. Any team at this level can ill afford to lose three of their better players before the end of the fourth over.

They must regroup and concentrate on their promotion push over the final games of the York Vale League Five season.
