Winning ways return as title nears
Newport 1st X1 171-6
Hull Zingari 3rds 126-8
Newport firsts returned to winning ways at home to Hull Zingari and now need just seven points from their two remaining games to win the championship.
Newport were missing five regulars due to injury, harvesting and Hull City but were able to overcome a spirited reply from the visitors to win by 45 runs.
The hosts elected to bat and made 42 in the first ten overs for the loss of openers Chris Feller (6) and Steve Clarke (12) - both caught spooning catches on a slow, damp pitch. Joe Hudson went the same way for 10 and when stand-in skipper Danny Smith was lbw for 19, Newport were struggling at 62-4.
Matthew Phillips and Graeme Buffrey, back after a long injury lay-off, sensibly rebuilt the innings and then accelerated in a match winning stand of 108 for the fifth wicket. Phillips was run out in the last over for 36, but Buffrey finished 55 not out with nine fours and a six as Newport closed on 171-6, just short of the fourth batting point.
Hull Zingari started well, with Burridge timing the ball impressively abd scoring 51 in quick time before Gavin Branton, in his first over, had him caught at mid wicket by Matt Phillips.
Randal Yates also struck in his first over, having Davidson caught at square leg by Chris Feller for four.
John Todd returned for a decisive second spell and four wickets fell at the same score as the visitors subsided to 116-7.
Todd bowled three and had one lbw to take 4-41. Yates also had more success to finish with 3-32.
The visitors finished with 126 - 8, with opener Summerscales not out 37, having retired for a time with cramp.
Newport took 16 points from the game and a win at home to Rudston next week will secure the title.
Hull Zingari 4th X1 dnb
Newport 2nd XI 125-5
Newport seconds had not played for a month due to matches conceded and bad weather but they did at least start a game on Sunday away to Hull Zingari 4ths at Skidby, but the weather won again when the game was abandoned after 34 overs with Newport having been put in, 125-5.
Steve Clarke and Randal Yates struggled on a damp pitch and some wide bowling by the home side. They had reached 38 in 15 overs when Yates edged Kemp to the keeper for 11.
Carl Coates top-edged Nayyer to the keeper for just one and Paul Tough, on six, drove a ball back to Nayyer. Gav Branton when three was unlucky to be caught one-handed by Kemp at cover from a well stuck drive. Newport at this stage were 80-4 after 27 overs.
Steve Clarke, after a slow start, was now beginning to accelerate and in partnership with Richie Harrison reached his fifty with a four behind square leg.
This pair added 45 in eight overs before Clarke, having made 80 with nine fours and a six, top-edged Kemp, who held the return catch.
At this point the game was halted by rain, which became heavy and persistent, causing an abandonment with Newport taking seven points and Zingari six.
Next week Newport travel to Yapham.
Newport CC would like to thank Paul and the staff at the Kings Arms, Newport for after-match hospitality.
