Firsts still have work to do
Carlton Towers 151
Osbaldwick 152-4
Carlton Towers' first defeat since June 7 came at the Fishpond Field on Saturday, and although a blow to their efforts to continue their recent upturn in form, the results of others kept them clear of the relegation zone.
On a difficult wicket, Osbaldwick took advantage of winning the toss and although the early loss of Paul Wright gave them the momentum, Jonathan Dilks set about the attack.
He made 35 before selecting the wrong shot, playing back to the wrong ball, which struck his off stump. This was the start of the crash and although Richard Knapp, who made 32, and the ever-improving Mark Chambers (23) in a partnership of 41 the conditions, which Osbaldwick were making the best of, put Carlton Towers in destruction mode.
Although the batsmen managed to graft their way to 151 from the 45 overs, the debate was whether the Osbaldwick batsmen would apply themselves better.
It did not take long to predict the result as the batsmen cruised their way to the victory and never appeared to be in the sort of trouble to produce an upset. Paul Wright, Carlton Towers' most productive bowler this term, failed to gain the breakthrough and it was Grant Nicholson who took the first wicket, although the visitors had made 51 in 14 overs.
Wright had changed ends, but nothing came until he came back on at the Bridge end. He then had Hattee leg before for 22.
It was not then until the 26th over, with Osbaldwick requiring 34 for victory when he cleaned up the wickets of Exley, who made 19 and Carew for a duck, that any real pressure was made, and it was a false dawn as Dunne made his half century as the target was overtaken with nine overs remaining.
There are five matches remaining and whilst mid-table security is beckoning, safety from the relegation dog fight is still unfinished business.
Tadcaster Magnet II 54
Carlton Towers II 162
Carlton Towers II returned to form in an embarrassingly one-sided affair against Tadcaster Magnet, who appear to be destined for this season's wooden spoon.
The loss of a number of influential players has severely hit the Brewers and this was very much in evidence. It was one of Carlton Towers senior campaigners, Simon Boddye, who showed what they were missing. He made an undefeated 49 and was the chief architect of Carlton Towers' recovery from 75-6.
Earlier, Nick Kline, returning from Holiday, who made 22 and Robyn Still with 25 set the side on course. However, James Still, Chris Heald and Louis Ellin, were dismissed cheaply and it needed the right body of experience to see the side through.
David Squires and Robert Clayton both made double figures to assist and at the end of the over allocation the last wicket fell with 162 on the board. James Key took 3-39 and Paul Downey coming on as second change took 3-16.
In reply, the only batsman to make double figures was opener Dave Cullodan with 13. Richard Cowling and Simon Boddye, who both opened the attack took 3 wickets each, Cowling taking 3 for 19 from his eight over spell and Boddye who capped a fine all round display, conceded only six runs from his nine over spell.
It took 26 overs to dismiss Tadcaster and keep alive Carlton Towers' outside hopes of promotion to Division four.
