Sykehouse CC's second team ran out comfortable winners against Rothwell after a keenly-contested Pontefract League game in West Yorkshire.

After a rain-delayed start, Sykehouse, who won the toss and opted to bat, soon got into their stride, with Trevor Leake and Ken Manning forging a useful opening partnership.

Manning was out for 29 and Leake for five, but a third-wicket partnership of 129 by young James Davies and Mick Roper saw Sykehouse move into the ascendancy.

Roper top-scored for Sykehouse with 79, which included seven sixes and seven fours. Davies's measured innings of 45 was the perfect foil for Roper's quick-fire burst of boundaries.

After their wickets eventually fell it was left to Ian Stoddart, and particularly captain John Creaser, to finish the job off with some savage hitting.

Creaser hit three sixes and two fours in the space of five overs and brought the innings to a close on 30 not out. Sykehouse finished on a total of 219-4 following their rain-reduced innings of 41 overs.

Rothwell made a bright start, their openers getting after the Sykehouse bowlers.

But, after a succession of boundaries, the breakthrough came thanks to seamer Nick Gough, whose pinpoint accuracy gave Rothwell all kinds of problems throughout their innings.

Gough finished with figures of 5-45 from 13 overs. Fellow opening bowler Mick Roper topped off a marvelloyus batting display with figures of 4-42, as the Rothwell innings collapsed in spectacular fashion.

The West Yorkshire team were all out for 95 after 27 overs, the final wicket coming from a run-out.

Sykehouse's best display of the season so far will give them added impetus as they seek to climb up the Division Six league table.
