North Dalton 160-5

Newport 1st X1 158

Newport firsts were beaten for the first time this season when they failed to defend a modest total at North Dalton and lost by five wickets.

They were put in and struggled on a lively pitch, Mark Ogram the first to go, plumb lbw to a ball which kept low for 14. Miles Kirk perished in the next over, also for 14, holing out to long off.

Carl Wilson picked out the fielder on the cover boundary before he had scored and when Danny Smith was bowled for 16, Newport were struggling on 54-4.

Joe Hudson came to the rescue with a confident knock of 34 which took the score past 100 before, trying to pull, he unluckily hit his own wicket. This triggered another collapse as two more wickets went down quickly, leaving Newport in deep trouble at 103-7.

Chris Feller and Randal Yates brought about a partial recovery with 45 for the 8th wicket but Anderson, the home side's most successful bowler with 4-25, bowled Yates for 25 and caught and bowled Feller for 24.

Newport were all out for 158 in the 39th over, which was about thirty runs short of a decent target on a small ground.

The visitors needed a good start but the North Dalton openers Bradley and Lees were soon rattling along at four an over until Randal Yates had Bradley caught behind for 17. Mark Phillips slowed the scoring considerably and bowled Lees for 25.

With North Dalton 68-2 at the half way point the game was in the balance. Phillips and Carl Wilson restricted the home side to just eight runs in eight overs and Wilson deservedly picked up the wickets of Connor for one and Walgate for 25, both bowled. Newport looked to be back in the game.

Suddard joined Addie needing 50 off eight overs, but a couple of lusty blows for six by Suddard relieved the pressure and Addie saw North Dalton to victory reaching his half century with the winning hit in the 38th over. Wilson took 2- 60 in nineteen overs and Phillips 2-48 in eleven.

Newport picked up just four points but remain clear at the top, and this Saturday travel to Hornsea looking to get back to winning ways.
