Local players shine for league
The Hunters York and District Senior League reached the semi final of the Leeds Area Knockout Competition for the first time since 2005 by defeating last season's champions, Huddersfield Central League by seven wickets at a well-organised Carlton Towers on Sunday.
The club was the venue for the Hunters York Senior League's first-ever match in the competition and also hosted the final in 2000 won by the Howdenshire Evening League.
Anthony Gibbins from Goole Town and Carl Blundell from York were making their debut's for the Hunters York and District Senior League.
Half centuries from Anthony Gibbins, Craig Shipton from Whitkirk, shortly to depart to pastures new in the middle east and from the impressive Adam Fisher from Sheriff Hutton Bridge, ensured that the side progressed to the next round without serious incident.
Earlier Hornsea's Richard Medforth bowling two separate spells took 4 for 25 from his eight overs, whilst Barry Sayer from Clifton Alliance, Neil Foster from Goole Town and Carl Blundell from York, took wickets to reduce the Huddersfield League to 198-7.
This was despite the efforts of Shoab Latif who made a damaging 63, Darren Lockwood with 44 and Hanif Mahboob with 38.
It was an impressive opening partnership of 70 from Craig Shipton and Anthony Gibbins, who made 50 that got the York side off the blocks, in a devastating 12 over spell and although Matt Beckett from Stamford Bridge lost out to Latif without troubling the scorers, Adam Fisher and Craig Shipton put on 84 for the third wicket before the Whitkirk stalwart was stumped for 64.
York required 40 for victory from six overs and this was achieved with 11 balls remaining thanks to some efficient running between the wickets from Fisher and Neil Foster.
Fisher made his half century with a four to overtake the target set, whilst Foster finished undefeated on 19.
The side now play against the Pontefract League in the semi final.
