An eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Driffield III on Saturday may have put a decisive dent in Goole seconds' promotion hopes this season.

This Division 5A clash against the Woldsmen saw the visitors struggle to impose themselves on the bowlers in their 45 overs of 122-9, and then the home side strode to their task in clinical fashion.

John McGrory and Mark Shipp found scoring difficult against the opening attack of Warner and Anderson.

They stayed together for 18 overs, but could muster only 39 before Shipp fell for 32, bowled by Woodcock.

McGrory made two singles in 24 overs at the crease before he was second out to the experienced Driskell, and the rest of the batting tried to raise the temp with several into double figures.

Mark West and Steve Foster both hit 16 and Jake Mahoney made 11, however the target was always going to be hard to defend and Driffield were in no hurry with the asking rate under three runs an over.

They reached 35 in the 10th over before a ray of hope for Goole when Mark West induced Dobson to provide the returning Jamie Shipp with a catch,

However hopes of getting into the middle order of the Driffield batting went with McLaren and Richardson taking the score to 96 before the former was caught by Ben Earl off the bowling of Will O'Donnell.

Richardson remained steadfast and Nessfield joined him in knocking off the remaining 26 runs by the 29th over.

It does look a heavy defeat on paper, but this was a strong Driffield line-up, with several second team players on view.

Right, Goole second team captain Barry Clements, will try to rally the side in the remaining games of the season although their promotion hopes are slim. (03-05-69 GT)
