Welton 219-9, Airmyn 268-4

A weakened Airmyn side put on a great performance, thanks to a superb opening stand of 160 from Holah and Smith against Welton in the East Yorkshire Alliance on Saturday.

Smith scored a chanceless 109 and Holah 77 as both players took advantage of a good track. The latter finally holed out, but more good support from Stevens (21) and Roper, unbeaten on 36 took the villagers to an imposing 268-4.

With bowling resources limited, Airmyn needed a high score and Holah turned to his bowling prowess to strike first ball and when Ward took a second wicket things looked good.

Price decided the best form of defence was attack and blasted a quickfire 77 before young Dane Neal cowled him in a fine spell of swing bowling and he finished with 3-38.

Stevens was introduced to the attack and he took the wicket of the unlucky Firbank, and then Holah picked up three more wickets in a marathon 23 over spell.

As the home side battened down the hatches for a losing draw, Smith produced a wonderful leg break, but despite trying as hard as they could, the villagers could not take the final wicket and had to settle for a winning draw.

A fine display from the youngsters, four of whom were 13 years old and the future looks bright for the club if they continue with the same attitude. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Roy Batho.
