Tense finish goes way of visitors
Goole Town 1st XI 182
Acomb 183-8
A clip through the leg side by New Zealand Maori Adrian Fong earned visitors Acomb a narrow victory in another exciting York Senior League Premier Division clash at Westfield on Saturday.
For Goole, they can reflect on their batting which stalled midway through their innings and although 182 was always a competitive total, it fell 20 runs short of expectations, this on a track which had variable bounce but was no minefield.
And it was Mr Fong who played no small part in restricting Goole as his medium pace from the River End, coupled with teenager Harry Booth's gentle off spin at the Pavilion End, slowed the home side to a crawl at one stage.
Despite the steady left-arm seam of Dave Sykes, Goole made good progress after being asked to bat first and Ashley Hulme and Anthony Gibbins scored comfortably before the Australian fell for 11. The impetus continued with Kevin Murphy and Gibbins, the former looking most assured against some wayward bowling from Beech.
However, Goole's problems lay in losing wickets when looking set, and the innings totally lost momentum in mid-stream.
Dan Murphy made 19, and it was left to Neil Foster to try and establish a platform in the closing overs, however when he fell for 41 to the admirable Fong, hopes of a score in excess of 200 went.
That, despite good play by Richard Mann with 19 at the end.
In reply, Acomb went in with a plan for pinch-hitting and the burly figure of Dickinson did just that as he scored 32 out of an opening stand of 47, with the patient Andy Tute at the other end.
Mann, who was unlucky at times, it has to be said, did go for too many boundaries, but Dickinson's aim was clear.
When he fell, clean-bowled by Mann, Tute was joined by Paul Hemingway and they appeared to be coasting to a win without much trouble at 112-1 in the 29th over.
But never rule out Dave England in these situations, and although it took him until the fifth ball of his 15th over to take a wicket - that of opener Tute for 49, he then accounted for Sykes, in the same way, caught Foster at cover point and the game was turning.
True, Acomb's frailties in the middle order were exposed by England and the impressive Ben Lamb, but they found a batsman in Fong, who kept his head when all around them were losing theirs and he got the visitors home off the penultimate ball.
One or two weaknesses are being found in the Goole side at the moment, but they have lost key personnel, and stand to lose one or two more in the coming weeks, but they are safe from the fear of relegation - and that was the number one priority.
