Flamborough 169-9

Newport firsts recorded their ninth victory, remain unbeaten and are well clear at the top of the East Riding Independent League Division One after a comfortable home win over Flamborough last Saturday.

The visitors elected to bat first and openers Andy and Mel Dixon gave them a good start with 89 in 19 overs as the Newport bowlers toiled in the heat. Eventually Andy Dixon fell for 51 to a good running catch by Joe Hudson at fine leg off Matthew Phillips and in the next over Mel Dixon was superbly caught by a diving Chris Feller at cover off Mark Phillips for 21.

The Flamborough innings fell away badly as the father and son Phillips' took two further wickets each. Chris Feller took another catch and John Todd two, one a fine one handed effort at short leg.

Steve Collins came on to polish off the tail with two wickets and only Trowell with 22 got going for Flamborough who closed on 169-9.

Mark Phillips took 3-43 in 12 overs and Matthew Phillips 3-36 in seven overs. Newport messed up a run out off the last ball which would have given them the full four bowling points.

Mark Ogram and Miles Kirk were made to work hard for their runs initially by England and Trowell and had made just 29 after ten overs. Ogram's answer to being pinned down was a six over point off England but he was caught behind for 21 next ball. Danny Smith was in touch straight away and Kirk also began to find the middle of the bat.

Together they added 134 unbeaten runs for the second wicket in 19 overs. Kirk scored 78 not out with nine fours and two sixes.

Smith reached his half century when he struck his sixth four through the covers to win the game. He also hit one six. Newport take sixteen points from this win and remain almost two wins clear of Middleton and Brandesburton. Next week Newport travel to bottom placed North Dalton.

Hornsea 4th X1 v Newport 2nd XI

Newport recorded a third successive win and are now up to third in the table but unfortunately this was due to Hornsea fourths conceding the game having only seven players available.

The seconds are without a game next weekend.
