Firsts continue the battle for safety
Carlton Towers 222-7
Tadcaster Magnet 182-9
Carlton Towers continued their fine run of form with an emphatic advantage draw against Tadcaster Magnet at the Fishpond Field on Saturday.
Despite taking 27 from a possible 30 points, though, the side remains in the bottom two of the Division, although mid-table security appears on the horizon.
It was yet another landmark for a number of batsmen, whose form has coincided with the upturn in fortune.
Darren Graves, in particular, has made the number three berth his own. Having been the major batsman in the past four seasons scoring runs in the seconds, he made another half century with 67, being unfortunate to be run out and also Jonathan Dilks, who made 63 before being caught by Anthony Daniels.
Having joined the club in the close season, Mark Chambers made his best score for the firsts with 33 including seven fours and assisted the side in making 222, their highest League score this season.
Tadcaster Magnet were in trouble early on and soon found themselves at 55-6 from 18 overs. Both Paul Wright and Mark Spetch took a brace of wickets each, with Spetch conceding only 15 runs from his initial enforced five-over spell and the result appeared not to be in any doubt.
However, visiting captain Paul Clark, coming in at number seven, led from the front by making an impressive 68. He added 122 in a seventh-wicket partnership with Steve Hoather, who fell just short of his half century with 48.
The reintroduction into the attack of Paul Wright stemmed the tide, though. He bowled his last three overs without conceding a run and took two more wickets in the process. Although there remained five overs to take the wicket of the last man, it was not to be and the side had to settle for three points less.
It is now a critical time of the season for the side but with this, a typical performance in recent weeks, the future is in their own hands.
Rowntrees 96, Carlton Towers II 242-3
This was Carlton Towers II's most impressive performance to date. Having been stopped in their tracks on the way to a likely victory against leaders Thorp Arch & Boston Spa last week, the opposition were again dismissed for less than 100, to give the side a 146-run success.
Whilst the batting and fielding display was quality, it was the performance of two individuals that sat like cream on the doorstep bottle of milk.
In reaching the massive total, Yorkshire Ladies player Robyn Still made 97, falling just short of her maiden century for the club, having batted a marathon 39 overs before tiredness in the searing heat saw her caught out in what would have been her century stroke.
In response, Rowntrees' batsmen, tried to dig in with Andy Main and Tony Thompson putting on 48 for the fifth wicket, until Sam Morris was brought into the attack.
The 16-year-old, from the Oddfellows in Carlton, accounted for both in consecutive overs and just failed to take a hat-trick with the ball just rising above the top of the stumps, to save the batsman's blushes.
The youngster, playing only his second match of the season in the seconds eventually finished with figures of 5-5 from his four over spell, taking the last wicket, to secure victory.
Earlier, the Carlton Towers batsmen made hay in the sunshine with skipper Richard Knapp making 53 in a partnership of 130 with Robyn Still and David Hoe, returning to form with an impressive undefeated 58 that was an innings of pure delight for his club mates. The total of 242-3 was just reward for their efforts.
Such a score puts any opposition on the back foot, not to mention the home side and with Simon Boddye in the attack, Carlton Towers were as effective with the ball as with the bat. The now elder statesman of the side took 3 for 33 from his eight over spell, before Sam Morris took over.
The Morris phenomenon saw the last six wickets fall for only seven runs, with the final piece of action being a one handed individual effort from substitute fielder, club chairman, Paul Woffenden.
It just cannot get any better!
