Two of the better sides - on paper at least - fought out an exciting contest at a sun-baked Westfield in Saturday's York Senior League Division 5A clash.

In the end Goole seconds, like their seniors at Stamford Bridge, bowled superbly well, and it was Yapham who had to settle for a losing draw as they hung on at the end amidst excellent bowling, and in particular young Will O'Donnell.

He took 5-38 off nine overs to restrict the visitors to 138-9 in pursuit of 147 to win on a low, slow wicket where, much as in North Yorkshire, several batsmen got in but could never totally dominate.

O'Donnell, learning his trade well in the side's third team and occasionally, as on Saturday, in the seconds, ripped through the top and middle order as Yapham slumped from 55-1 in the 17th over to 82-6 in the 28th, but despite Steve Hicks, in one of his last games for the club possibly, took three wickets for 19 in an economical spell, but could not prise out the last pair as they hung on in a tense finish.

In fact all results were possible in searing heat, most welcome in what had been a horrible spell of Saturdays in the month.

Earlier, Goole themselves had struggled to assert and there were to be no centuries this week, although Neil Webster followed up his 104 last time out with 36 in a partnership with Steve Hicks at the top of the innings.

Despite 32 from Jake Mahoney, with four boundaries and a five, it was Nigel West who stopped Goole from getting a really challenging total with 4-9 in five overs, well supported by Ben Brown with 2-20.

Yapham were slow in their reply, and there was no rush, but good tight bowling from James Kerr, without any reward, opened the door for O'Donnell and Hicks to assert the pressure that they could not overcome.

If one had to be critical, 31 extras in the Yapham reply with the majority wides, does need addressing in time, but then on the other hand there were five clean-bowled victims, Hicks with his full length from a prodigious height, despite nowhere near fully fit, and O'Donnell had one of those days where he was also helped by several smart catches.

Goole remain fourth in the table, but still with the ability to go higher, especially with players due to return this week.
