A night of shocks in top division
The Verm's captain Andy Hurson had a big smile on his face this week. Not just because his side played really well to beat Creykes Tigers 7-3 but because his two biggest rivals, Buchanan Badstars and Buchanan Badboys, suffered defeats in a week of unexpected results in the Premiership Division of the Goole Pool League.
Buchanan Badstars, who have been getting great results all season, completely went to pieces against N.U.R. Neanderthals, who ran out easy 7-3 winners. N.U.R. had Rob and Lee Fallon back to top form along with Adam Walsh whereas only Mark Whiteley performed well for the Badstars.
Buchanan Badboys lost the opening four frames against Packet Hasbeens, so they didn't do too badly to end up losing 6-4.
Packet's Sean Broadhead has been involved in the Goole League for many, many years and was in magnificent form and dedicated his two wins to his late father who died suddenly last weekend. The sincere sympathies of the committee and all friends within the league go out to the Broadhead family.
Peacock Pirates have surprised many with their determined style of play and completely overwhelmed Shipmates of Swinefleet 7-3. Colin Hall starred once again for the Pirates and was ably assisted by Vince Mason.
Bottom House Bombers blasted Middle House Mavericks 8-2 for only their second win of their so far uninspiring league campaign. Rankin, Greaves, Brooks, Purves and Myers all hit form together, which might just give them a badly-needed confidence boost approaching the second half of the season.
Although Packet Panthers have a big reputation for being a very difficult side to beat, they still went down 6-4 to a spirited display from Royal Predators.
The Predators shot into a 4-1 lead but the usual fight back by the Panthers saw them draw level with wins by Emma Longster, Diane Sowden and Adam White.
It then took excellent performances by Steph Walker and the highly-regarded Jake Modi to seal victory for the relieved Predators, who move into second place in this division.
League leaders Board Inn Bandits continued on their merry way towards the Premiership with a facile 10-0 home win over Marshland Menaces. Tom Jackson, Tony Scruton, Dave Stevens and Darren Copperwheat all did the business for the Howden side but it was very worrying to see that Marshlands could field only three players in such a crucial fixture midway through the season.
Chris Lloyd and Kev Brewster were the stars in the five-all draw between Royal Flush and N.U.R. Clubbers and no scorecard was returned for the Viking Wizards versus Shipwrecks of Swinefleet match.
The remaining game in this division saw high-flying Vermuyden Vultures brought back to earth as North Eastern Newbies belied their lowly position with a fantastic 7-3 win that once again showcased the talents of Kev Ramsden, Lisa Smith and Adam Revell.
In Division Two Bottom House Brigade's improved form continued with a classy 9-1 win over Middle House Lasses, with the Simms clan of James, Mark and Paul bagging two good wins apiece. Maxine Johnson showed no mercy with the Lasses only win by outplaying the very talented teenager, Cameron Morris.
Although downhearted, Cameron should be grateful that he has learned an important lesson so early in life - never, ever trust a smiling, attractive woman! Well done, Maxine!
Lou Campbell was the only winner for the other all-female side, Charter Cheddars, who had no luck at all against a strong performance from Half Moon, whose top player was Toby Hart. The Reedness lads badly needed this 9-1 success to remain in third place, only three points adrift of the leaders.
Packet Pups did everything possible but failed to cope with the skills of Bobby Bundy and Matthew Dodson, who powered Jailhouse Jokers to a 6-4 triumph, which was their ninth win on the trot.
Cary Dean was jubilant as his Old Goole Club side beat North Eastern Flyers 8-2 thanks to improved play from Darren Brooks and Darren Hendricks.
League leaders Vic Casuals, who had Matthew West and Simon Newton on top of their game, still had to work very hard to beat the unlucky Jailhouse Jesters 6-4.
