Goole AFC has been issued with a writ for a winding up order by HM Revenue and Customs with less than a month to go before the start of the new 2008-2009 season.

However, before anyone fears that the club is going the same way as Goole Town F.C. in 1996, chairman Des O'Hearne has allayed those worries. Although the matter is serious, there will be UniBond football at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, only with the fact that they will start with a 10-point deduction.

And the reason for that is that the Vikings will enter into a Creditors' Voluntary Agreement (CVA) to protect the future interests of the club.

Mr O'Hearne issued a statement to the Goole Times on Tuesday in which he said: "The club has been issued with a winding up order by HM Revenue and Customs relating to an historical debt dating back to 2002, and refers to PAYE on players' expenses.

"Through the club's solicitors we made an offer to settle in full payment over a three-year period, which was turned down by the Revenue."

Des told the Goole Times further: "I am livid, really, as when I took over the club around that time the sums would have been manageable had I been fully aware of the facts."

The case, which is likely to be adjourned, will not even neccessitate a name change for the Vikings.

Chairman O’Hearne is actually relieved the whole matter is over, and has told the management and players that it is the end of the story.

“ The club has no other creditors, apart from the Revenue, and I urge people to support the club this term, and despite the points penalty, I can see no reason why the team cannot sustain a challenge for honours.”

And he is right, the club cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves, they are not the first to feel the wrath of the Revenue and Customs - and dare one say they will not be the last.

More pre-season games

Matches continue thick and fast at all levels with the first team in action tonight at Whitkirk, kick off 7.30pm and then they travel to Selby on Tuesday night for the Otisdale Cup match, also kick off 7.30pm.

That will be the last time the game is staged under that banner, but the clubs will play in future for a cup kindly donated in memory of long-serving Selby Town official, Steven Holliday, who passed away last year.

Meanwhile the Under 19s are in action on Sunday lunchtime at the VPG, kick off 1pm when they entertain a side from the Hull area, and then will play the Under 17s at the Pleasure Grounds on Tyesday night.
