With the weather putting paid to local cricket in Goole and Airmyn, July 12, yes July 12 saw the opening pre-season friendly at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds on Saturday afternoon.

And with holidays and unavailability putting paid to plenty of the main squad of players, there was a chance for the youngsters to shine.

However, a disjointed performance saw the Vikings lose 3-1 and frankly apart from a second half spell where Andy Parton pulled one back from a 2-0 half-time deficit, there was little to enthuse for a sun-drenched crowd.

In fact, those who decided there were better things to do probably had the best idea, and although one or two of the Under 19 squad looked composed at times on the ball, the defence with the experience of Craig Marsk and Craig Robinson looked anything but happy against a well-organised Thackley, now under new management and seemingly wanting to improve their performances from recent campaigns.

Therefore the performance on Tuesday night was better, and in turn a second-half revival from 2-0 down gave the Vikings a 3-2 win at Northern Counties East Division One side Tadcaster Albion, now under the management of former Goole No. 1 Paul Marshall.

With manager Nigel Danby back from holiday, there were also appearances for Steve Rollinson, Chris Tate and Karl Rose.

The Vikings also handed trials to Leigh Wood, whose Conference North credentials at Harrogate Town come highly recommended, but now having joined the Fire Service, his commitments are far more occupied by that.

Nevertheless, he and a trialist midfielder shone well as Goole, having missed a series of first half chances, then came on strong with two goals from Karl Rose and one from the 17 year old trialist Shaun Ward.

Intensity up a shade

The pre-season friendlies go up a notch on Monday night, kick off 7.45pm when Blue Square Conference side York City are the visitors to the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, kick of 7.45pm.

Leigh Wood, yet to sign for the club, is expected to make his mind up after the game and with several players expected to return, there should be more on view than in the Thackley defeat.

Under 19s shine

On Sunday afternoon, the new Under 19 side won a series of 30 minute friendly encounters 5-3 at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, and was a pleasing workout for Danny Buttle and Ammy Ninje's charges.

Josh Hewson, who played for much of Saturday's game too, had a good game and the Swinefleet forward worked hard to shine.

Cup payments increase

Yet more incentive for non-league clubs to look for giant-killing runs in the FA Cup, sponsored by E.ON.

The FA have announced a 69 per cent increase in the prize fund with payments to the competition proper rising to £12500 after the fourth qualifying round.

Even the preliminary round winners will receive £1500 and £3000 after the first qualifying round.
