Pool side sunk in the second half
Everything looked to be going really well for Shipmates of Swinefleet in this week's Premier Division of the Goole Pool League as they cruised to a 3-2 half-time lead on their travels to Creykes Tigers of Rawcliffe.
Alas, they were in for a big shock!
Without warning it was all hands on deck as they tried in vain to stop a spectacular fight back by the Tigers, who rattled off five winning frames on the trot for a memorable 7-3 win.
After the game victorious Creykes captain Roly Curley said:
"This was our best performance of the season so far. Kev Morrell and Phil Cowling played exceptionally well tonight. They outplayed us early on but then let us off the hook after the break."
Elsewhere in the top division Buchanan Badstars kept their rivals at bay with a smashing 7-3 win over Middle House Mavericks, who are struggling this season. The Badstars have Natalie Merrill in the form of her life at present coupled with the talent of Dave Hunt, which gives them tremendous firepower against the opposition.
The disappointing form of N.U.R. Neanderthals continued this week as they went down 7-3 to Packet Hasbeens who were inspired by superb play from Andy Waters and Simon Buck.
Kraig Barnes is doing a great job as captain of Buchanan Badboys, who beat Peacock Pirates 7-3 this week with top quality displays from Des Lancaster, Anthony Raspin and Andy Merrill. It doesn't take a vivid imagination to see the two Buchanan sides at the head of this division come the end of season.
Andy Hurson of The Verm may see a different end to the season, even though the reigning champions made hard work of winning 7-3 against Bottom House Bombers. Wayne Vause and Kirk Swan played well for the champs but once again Anthony Myers stood head and shoulders above everyone else with two top class wins for the struggling Bombers.
In Division One the multi-talented Board Inn Bandits made it eight wins on the bounce by thumping Vermuyden Vultures 8-2. The sporting Howden lads, however, were very quick to point out how impressed they were with the young Vermuyden side and thought that one or two would become top players with further match experience and a couple more seasons under their belt. Well said, lads!
There was a five-all draw between second placed Royal Predators and Viking Wizards.
Adi Brennan's two winning frames helped Shipwrecks of Swinefleet to a satisfying 7-3 victory over North Eastern Newbies, whose Ian Grant is undoubtedly one of the finest players outside the Premiership.
A 7-3 win over Royal Flush returned Marshland Menaces to the winners enclosure following a few poor results.
Niall Barker, whose father Paddy Ryan was a marvellous pool player seems to be a chip off the old block, with two fine wins for the Old Goole side, who have gathered a good squad together which could push for honours in the second half of the season.
A brilliant seven-ball clearance from the break by Kev Wright was the highlight of Neil Oldridge's N.U.R. Clubbers' fine 7-3 triumph over the consistent Packet Panthers. Wright's clearance was reminiscent of his outstanding play from seven years ago when he won the much-coveted "Cock of the Walk" title.
Bottom House Brigade sent out a clear message of intent this week in Division Two with their merciless 9-1 slaughter of North Eastern Flyers. Splendid wins by Cameron Morris and Dave Whur capped a marvellous performance from a strong side who aim to win this division.
Vic Casuals have only three points' lead at the top, despite an excellent 7-3 beating of Packet Pups, who were outplayed by the likes of Thomas Prime and James Hewson.
Old Goole Club were given a hard time by the skills of Andy Lloyd and Liam Cooper who fired Half Moon of Reedness to a convincing 7-3 win while the lasses of Middle House deserve credit for an unexpected 5-all draw with Jailhouse Jesters. Sarah Johnson and Lee Carroll were the two best players in this gripping contest.
Charter Cheddars ladies were no match for Jailhouse Jokers, who have now won all of their eight games and have scored 61 points which would have put them 10 points clear at the top except for rule infringements which have cost them an unbelievable 19 points.
What a shame for this extremely talented side, which includes the likes of Bobby Bundy, Rich Holgate, Matthew and Paul Dodson but what an utterly brilliant choice of team name!
