For the third time in four weeks, the 1st team's game was a victim if the weather, but Newport remain well clear at the top of the division.

Newport 2nd XI 112-9, Hutton Cranswick 2nd XI 108

Three times this season Newport have been on the wrong end of close games but this time they emerged successfully from a tight finish, winning at home to Hutton Cranswick by one wicket.

The visitors were put in and made a steady start, seeing off the Newport opening bowlers John Exley and Randal Yates.

Carl Morfitt, coming on at first change, dismissed Woolley, caught by Exley at fine leg off a top edge for 25 and Searby caught by Carl Coates at square leg for 19.

Smith and Hatton took the score on to 84 when Gavin Branton bowled Smith for 20.

Hutton Cranswick then collapsed dramatically. Branton took three more wickets, all bowled to finish with 4-29 and Chris Feller in his first game of the season also picked up four for 22 including Hatton for 23 with a stunning return catch.

Only Robinson with 16 not out made any headway, with six other batsmen making just one run between them. Hutton Cranswick were 108 all out in the 34th over.

Newport made a flying start as openers Steve Clarke and Chris Feller scored at almost five an over until Feller was caught at cover off Hatton for 29. Hatton then dismissed Clarke for 17 with a juggling return catch. Suddenly, scoring runs became much harder.

Randal Yates took a long time to find his touch but eventually played a captain's innings to see Newport to victory.

However, at the other end wickets fell regularly as the visitors' skipper, Hatton took 6-32. He bowled Carl Coates (6) and Gav Branton (1) and had Josh Chapman (4) caught.

Thomas meanwhile had Ryan Lamb, caught at cover and John Exley, lbw both without scoring leaving Newport struggling on 95-8. Carl Morfitt helped Yates take the score to 108 before he was lbw to Hatton for four and last man Phil Norton in his first game of the season played out the rest of the 38th over before Yates struck the winning run to finish unbeaten on 21.

Next week Newport firsts are at Nafferton whilst the seconds entertain leaders Hessle.

The club would like to thank the King's Arms, Newport for after-match hospitality.
