Adam Cawkill has long maintained that his Vermuyden Vultures team were capable of so much more than what they were presently accomplishing in Division One of the Goole Pool League.

This week, with an 8-2 thrashing over Shipwrecks of Swinefleet, his words do not sound so hollow as they climb to share second place in the league table.

This was a majestic performance from a very young side that has so much talent but very little good fortune. The Shipwrecks, who had only Joe Holt in any sort of form, were all at sea trying to cope with inspirational performances from Danny Nicholson, Nathan Croley and Cawkill himself.

Elsewhere in the division Viking Wizards had a welcome 6-4 win over NUR Clubbers.

Having been a Premiership outfit only a short time ago, the Clubbers are now bottom of this division, with further relegation staring them in the face. Wayne Jackson and Chris Nuttall were the lads who did most damage for Vikings.

Keith Preston was a great signing for Marshland Menaces but even his two wins could not prevent Packet Panthers beating them 6-4 on their own table, thanks to glorious play from Diane Sowden and John Sands.

Steph Walker is doing a splendid job as captain and points scorer for Royal Predators, who just edged a 6-4 win over the out of form North Eastern Newbies.

Board Inn Bandits' unbeaten run continued this week with an emphatic 7-3 beating of Royal Flush who, with the exception of Chris Lloyd, failed to cope with the sheer class of the Howden lads who are literally cruising towards promotion to the Premiership.

In Division Two Packet Pups underestimated the quality of Middle House Lasses, who scared them to death by winning the opening five frames! Fortunately, Matty Jones' rather blue half-time talk worked wonders and the Pups showed a Jack Russell-like determination to fight back for a five-all draw. Lesson learnt, lads!

The other female side, Charter Cheddars, also did well by taking three points off league leaders Vic Casuals. Angie Johnson, Teresa Martin and Lou Campbell deserve mention for their outstanding play in this smashing contest.

Pete Rowe won twice on his debut for Jailhouse Jesters but they still lost 7-3 to second-placed Bottom House Brigade, who had Dave Whur, Kev Fagg and Jim Stevens all in top form.

After a poor start to the season, Matthew and Paul Dodson are now firing on all cylinders for Jailhouse Jokers, who completely outplayed Old Goole Club with an 8-2 triumph. This makes it seven wins from seven games but with nineteen points deducted for rule infringements - to the amusement of teams above them in the table - they find themselves as also-rans instead of division leaders.

Half Moon of Reediness stay in touch with a spirited 6-4 win over the inconsistent North Eastern Flyers.

In the Premiership, excellent wins by Natalie Merrill and Barry Marston helped Buchanan Badstars to a hard-fought 6-4 win over The Verm, who failed to sparkle on this occasion. The Badstars finished a close-up third place last season and this result will certainly motivate them in their quest for the Premiership Crown.

Colin Hall's Peacock Pirates are doing marvellously well this campaign and take second place, thanks to a 7-3 win over the four-man N.U.R. Neanderthals, while Kraig Barnes' Buchanan Badboys completely destroyed Shipmates of Swinefleet 9-1.

With two fine wins by Gary Knights, Middle House Mavericks were good value for their 7-3 success over Packet Hasbeens, who are highly talented but a bit hit and miss at present.

Scott Bonner and Ian Todd did well for Creykes Tigers in their 5-all tie with Bottom House Bombers, but there was loud appreciation from both sides for two immaculate seven-ball clearances by Anthony Myers.
