Revenge will be in the eyes of the Goole players and management after the 2008-2009 UniBond fixtures were published on Monday morning,

They will travel to Staffordshire to face Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday, August 16, just under five months since their last visit to the Stan Brown Stadium which led to an horrific end of season collapse that saw them miss the play-offs.

That day they were humbled 4-0 just seven days after beating the lowly placed side 6-2 at Goole, and it also saw an injury to James O'Neill, which ended his season and further weakened an unsteady defence that was already without player/manager Nigel Danby and Liam Chapman that day.

The fixtures also see new opponents in the opening home game three days later when Lincoln United visit the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.

There are several different opponents this season with several clubs having been moved into the North division and the Vikings will see Rushall Olympic, Willenhall Town, Loughbrough Dynamos, Glapwell. Leek Town and Stamford in a 38-game programme that thankfully sees the demise of the three games against eight opponents that was introduced last term when only 18 teams were in each split UniBond One North and South.

As well as the league games, published in full in the right-hand column, they also include the draws for the early rounds of the UniBond League Challenge Cup and Presidents Cup, the latter of which saw the Vikings reach the semi final last time before losing to the eventual winners and also Division One North champions FC United of Manchester.

The first round sees the Vikings travel to Sheffield, with whom they had several titanic struggles last season, including a League Cup defeat on penalties at the Pleasure Grounds whilst in the UniBond Challenge Cup, Goole entertain one of their bogey sides Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Friendlies start this Saturday

With manager Nigel Danby on holiday until tomorrow, assistant Mike Norbury has been putting the players through their paces and they will take to the field for the first time on Saturday when they entertain Thackley from the Northern Counties East League at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds with a 3pm kick off.

Several players are still on holiday, too, but it will be a chance for one or two new faces to show the public what they are capable of with, as mentioned last week, striker Andy Parton back and looking sharp and refreshed after last season's troubled campaign which ended in November when released at Premier Division side Buxton.

Admission for Saturday will be £5 adults, £3 concessions and £2 for Under 14s.

Cup draws

One or two small amendments to the draws for the early rounds of the national cup competitions which were in the Goole Times last week.

The Vikings are still at home in the preliminary round of the FA Cup, sponsored by E.ON, but it will be against the winners of the tie between Norton and Stockton Ancients and Newcastle Benfield Saints, and not Jarrow Roofing Bolden as stated.

The winners of that tie are at home again to the winners of Jarrow Roofing Bolden or Spennymoor Town v Bridlington Town or Guisborough Town so the incentive is there for the club to look for financial reward for a change.

In the FA Trophy, the Vikings' opponents are Nuneaton, but they are now called Town, and not Borough as more famously called before their relegation from the Conference.

Season ticket sales

The coupon that has been in the Goole Times for the previous two issues is in for the final time this week, but you will be able to purchase tickets at the turnstiles on Saturday. With admission prices having increased, the prices represent good value for the UniBond League One South.

Pitch and ground in good condition

And supporters who turn up at the VPG on Saturday will see the pitch in fine condition after the renovation work over the close season.

Also the hard work off the field in painting the dressing rooms sees the old ground looking as good as it has at this time.
