Mixed results for Newport
Newport 1st X1 v Hull Zingari 3rd XI E.R. Independent Div 1
Newport led the division by thirty points after their seventh successive victory at Hull Zingari but it was not a vintage performance in the field.
Six dropped catches and two missed run-outs meant the home side scored at least fifty more runs than they should have. Zingari were put in with the game reduced to 35 overs a side after a delayed start and struggled on a difficult drying pitch. Miles Kirk dismissed both openers - Davidson caught behind for 4 and Summerfield well held by Graeme Buffrey at cover for 16.
Leigh and Frankish were both dropped early on and made Newport pay for their lapses as both scored 31 before Leigh was well caught by Buffrey at mid off and Frankish bowled by Steve Collins. Collins and Richie Harrison each picked up three wickets as Zingari looked to accelerate unsuccessful and keeper Mark Ogram finished with two catches and three stumpings. Zingari closed on 124 for 8, Kirk 2-19, Harrison 3-47 and Collins 3-39 were the successful bowlers.
Miles Kirk, batting in his inimitable way, struck a quick 32 before holing out at short third man and when Mark Ogram drove a return catch when on 23 and Graeme Buffrey was unluckily bowled off his pads for 5, Newport were struggling a bit on 78 for 3. However, Steve Clarke and Matthew Phillips carefully accumulated runs and although Clarke was caught at mid off for 22, Phillips with 20 saw Newport home with three overs to spare. Newport take 15 points from this win and visit defending champions Rudston next weekend.
Newport 2nd XI v Hull Zingari 4th XI E.R. Independent Div 3
Newport, looking to recover from three successive narrow defeats, were handicapped by call-ups to the first team and suffered a comprehensive home defeat to Hull Zingari 4ths. Batting first, the visitors struggled, scoring just 20 off the first ten overs.
Carl Morfitt bowled Leckenby for 14 and looked to have had Aziz caught behind first ball but the appeal was turned down. At halfway the visitors had just 52 on the board but Marsden and Aziz accelerated with good effect until Randal Yates had Marsden caught for 48 but Nithen was immediately in touch and Zingari scored at ten an over for the last few overs. Eventually Morfitt had Aziz well caught at deep square leg by Gav Branton for 86 but with Nithen 52 not out Zingari closed on a challenging 210 for 3.
Newport made a positive start, reaching 56 for 2 at ten overs having lost Mike Earley for 7 and Gav Branton for a rapid 16. Randal Yates and Carl Coates were both in form but when they were out - Yates caught and bowled by Nethin for 28 and Coates well held on the boundary for a top score of 30 - the innings fell away and Newport were all out for 117 in the 27th over. Nethin took 4 for 15 and Aziz 3 for 34. Next week Newport entertain league newcomers Yapham.
Newport CC would like to thank Paul and the staff at the King's Arms, Newport for after match hospitality and Mel Gregory for scoring home matches.
