Newport 1st X1 156-6
Hornsea 3rd XI 118
It's now six out of six for Newport who extended their lead at the top of the East Riding Independent League Division One with a comfortable 38 run victory at home to Hornsea.
Batting first, Graeme Buffrey gave Newport a flying start with a impressive 22 with five fours before he was bowled by Wilson.
Danny Smith (16) again got going but did not push on to a big score and Carl Wilson struggling with the slow wicket did not last long.
Meanwhile skipper Mark Ogram was also not at his best but Matthew Phillips continued his impressive season with a classy 26 until he was run out. Ogram's patient knock ended when he was caught off Hanna for 41. Richie Harrison and Paul Tough kept the momentum going till the end and Newport's innings closed on 156 for 6 have scored at around four an over throughout.
Most of the Hornsea batsmen got in but none of them went on to get the sort of score which would have enabled them to challenge Newport's total. Opener Hornby made 21 before he was well caught by Paul Tough off Carl Wilson who took the first three wickets for 23.
Matthew Phillips dealt with the middle order with 3 for 48 including Jordan for a top score of 24 - a superb caught and bowled of a full blooded drive. Mark Phillips and Richie Harrison polished off the tailenders in quick time with Graeme Buffrey taking two excellent catches and Hornsea were all out for 118 in the 32nd over. Newport take 17 points for this win.
Narrow defeat for third game running
Leven 2nd XI 93, Newport 2nd XI 92
For the third game running Newport endured the disappointment of defeat in a close game this time losing by just one run at Leven.
They have now won just once out of five when it could easily have been four. Newport put the home side in and soon had them in deep trouble on a drying pitch.
The young Leven batsmen tried to attack and perished to skipper Randal Yates who took a season's best 5-29 aided by smart catching from Mike Earley and Ryan Lamb.
John Exley was accuracy personified at the other end bowling Hickson for 16 and soon Leven were 41-6. Richardson and Hobson played very sensibly in a stand of 21 for the seventh wicket before Hobson was run out by an Exley direct hit from mid off and Rich Sansom bowled Richardson for 14.
Carver struck two big sixes in his 20 before Sansom bowled him and Leven were all out for 93 in the 35th over.
Newport made a poor start losing Steve Clarke and Rich Sansom cheaply and when Randal Yates was unluckily run out for seven backing up, Newport were struggling on 23-3.
Gav Branton struck a quick 14 and Mike Earley with the top score of 29 took Newport to 65-7, but victory still looked a long way off until John Exley and Carl Morfitt used all their experience to get to 86 before Morfitt was caught for nine.
Danny Patrick defended stoutly whilst Exley (11*) picked off the singles until just two runs were needed for victory when Berzins who took 4 for 19 bowled Patrick and Newport were all out for 92.
Next week both teams are in action against Hull Zingari, the 1st XI away to Zingari seconds, and the 2nds at home to Zingari thirds.
Newport CC would like to thank Paul and the staff at the King's Arms, Newport for after match hospitality and Rhonda for the weekly raffle.
