North Ferriby Ath. 4

AFC Charter 4

A game full of incident from start to finish, none more so than Charter scoring a goal in the last minute, thinking they had won 5 - 4, only for the referee to disallow it for an apparent offside.

On his decision he realised he was wrong, but had to stick with his original decision, then made things worse by apologising at full time, saying he should have allowed the goal.

It has ultimately cost Charter the league, with Ferriby getting the draw they needed to win the County League Premier Division.

Ramskill saw red at the final whistle, letting out all his rage at the referee, who was gutted at what he had caused, blaming the league for not having official linesmen on the day. Charter have since reported this, but don't expect to hear any further.

So runners-up spot it is for Charter, with Ferriby knowing they had luck on the day.

The game itself saw Charter come back from the dead. In the first 15 minutes of the game they had Jason Gibbon injured, who managed to hobble on and Rob Constable taken to hospital with a badly-swollen ankle after a late challenge.

Losing such an influential player, Charter went to sleep and Ferriby took the advantage and struck not once, but three times in five minutes, with keeper Hall having a nightmare spell in such an important game.

However, their never-say-die attitude saw them pull two goals back before half time, Wheldrake the first with one of his trademark free kicks and then Thompson pouncing on the loose ball as the keeper saved from a shot from Gibbon.

Charter had put themselves back in the game and looked like a team on a mission after the restart.

Straight from the kick-off they surged forward and a cross from Wheldrake saw Ramskill's shot at the far post was saved by the keeper's legs.

Two minutes later Jamie Jackson saw his shot go inches wide, but on the counter attack Johnson was robbed by a Ferriby forward, who stabbed home.

Two goals down once more, Charter hadn't given up though, introducing Croley to set about the Ferriby back line.

Jackson, who never gives up on lost causes, calmly finished to pull a goal back with a quarter of an hour left, and the substitute equalised five minutes later.

Charter were now in the driving seat, and they thought they had won the day when Croley headed home at the far post, only for the referee to wrongly disallow for offside.

He admitted his mistake, but the result stands and Ferriby win the league, rendering this Saturday's game with Northfield meaningless and the teams have agreed a point each.

Man of the Match for the Charter was awarded jointly to Neil Harrison and Lee Thompson.

Presentation night

Charter's end of season presentation is to be held on Saturday, June 7 at the Charter Club with Jack the Lad, a blue comedian starring on the night along with disco and karaoke, sure to be a night to remember.

Tickets are on sale at £5 each from the Charter Club or from Mark Lockwood (07857 688221) or Dave Munday (07806 637980).
