Newport 1st X1 182-5

Nafferton 1st XI 161

Newport made it four wins out of four to remain at the top of the League by defeating Nafferton by 21 runs at the Recreation Field on Saturday.

Batting first, Newport were soon going well. Miles Kirk's first five scoring shots were boundaries but he was bowled by Sawyer for 21.

Danny Smith joined Mark Ogram in a stand of 51 for the second wicket, but both fell at 93 - Ogram caught for 29 off Sawyer and Smith caught off Adams for 19.

Richie Harrison did not last long, but Carl Wilson and Matthew Phillips restored the innings until Wilson was bowled by Adams for 32.

Andy Harrison joined Phillips and secured the fourth bonus point in the final over as Phillips top-scored with 44 and Harrison made 16 as they closed on 182 - 5.

Nafferton made an equally positive start and had 50 up in ten overs for the loss of Goddard, caught behind off Kirk for 11.

The visitors continued to score quickly but lost wickets at regular intervals, with Mark Phillips picking up two and Andy Harrison one.

At the half way mark Nafferton were 110-7, looking right out of it with Richie Harrison working his way through the tail-enders. When he had Gaunt caught by Josh Chapman at mid wicket they were 134-9, but a spirited last-wicket stand by Fairburn and Brooksby gave them a faint chance of a win and a few anxious moments for Newport.

Then, in the 35th over, Harrison had Fairburn lbw for 15 to finish with 6-42 and Nafferton were all out for 161.

Hessle 3rd XI 118-7,

Newport 2nd XI 116

Newport, in third place after last week's win, travelled to fourth place Hessle but lost by three wickets in a tight game.

The seconds elected to bat first on what proved a difficult pitch, with long grass in the outfield.

Steve Clarke started positively before he was caught for 13, and three quick wickets put Newport in trouble at 40-5.

Skipper Randal Yates was holding on, but when he was caught behind off Broadley for a patient 18 it looked unlikely that Newport would made 100.

However, Mike Earley was positive from the start and with support from John Exley (13) and Andy Branton (12) his 43 with three sixes and four fours enabled Newport to reach 116 all out.

Fyvie and Dawson scored 46 for the first wicket before the former was run out by Paul Tough.

Wainman gave Fyvie good support and Hessle were coasting to victory. However, Newport fought back.

Two quick wickets by Carl Morfitt and a direct hit run out from point by Gavin Branton had Hessle rocking but Fyvie, dropped six times, saw his side to a win.

Newport would like to thank Paul and the staff at the King's Arms, Newport for after-match hospitality.

The seconds entertain Hornsea 4ths, with half of the club heading for Wembley to see Hull City.
