Carlton Towers I 109

Dringhouses 121

Carlton Towers' poor batting form continued, losing the opportunity to gain their first success of the year by failing to overtake the modest total set by Dringhouses of 121 and finding themselves at the foot of Division Two.

It was a game of two contrasting fortunes. The Dringhouses batsmen struggled against the Carlton Towers attack of Paul Wright, captaining the side in the absence of skipper Jamie Pocklington, and featuring Grant Nicholson for the first time this season.

It was the introduction of Callum Reilly in the 11th over, though, that put the Fishpond Field side in charge of the match. He dismissed the batsmen with his pace, taking 5-28 in a seven-over spell, reducing Dringhouses to 67-7.

Andy Stipetic made 27 in the early Dringhouses innings, but it was the ever youthful Mick Kenyon who assisted his side to 121. The Dringhouses stalwart, having recovered from a serious illness made an unbeaten 32, having come in at number nine.

Paul Wright and Grant Nicholson took a brace of wickets each conceding six and 31 runs respectively, whilst keeper Mark Chambers took three victims.

The promise that came from an upbeat bowling and fielding performance soon changed as the Carlton Towers innings saw wickets fall.

By the 12th over, the side had been reduced to 34- 5, mainly due to the efforts of John Crowe, the paceman taking four of the wickets for only13 runs. Paul Wright went in at number five to strengthen the middle order, but was bowled by Mick Kenyon, one of his three victims on the day, for 15.

At 45 - 6, the writing was on the wall for another bottom placing. However, a seventh-wicket partnership of 60 put the target in sight only for Graham Spence, who made an impressive 29, to find himself run out following a mix up with his partner Grant Nicholson.

That sparked the end of the recovery, and the challenge on the total as Nicholson was then out for 17, followed by the last two batsmen some 13 runs short of victory. Mick Kenyon finished with 3-10 from his 14 overs.

Carlton Towers' fortunes will have to improve if their potential is realised. The bad start though may not be as terminal as others may appear to think.

Dringhouses II 142, Carlton Towers II 224-5

Carlton Towers II continued their fine run of form, following on from an impressive winning draw against Division 5B leaders Rowntrees II last week, this time to take maximum points from Dringhouses II by a margin of 82 runs.

There were two major milestones in the match. Skipper Richard Knapp, who has taken over the captaincy this year from Steve Watson, made his maiden century with an unbeaten 102. Having played with the club since 1995, and having gone close to this milestone, he eventually achieved a century, hitting 12 fours in the total.

The Carlton Towers side also featured Robyn Still, its first woman cricketer to play in senior competitive cricket, who was making her debut. She came in at number three and made an impressive 49, putting on a partnership of 115 with Richard Knapp.

Further batting contributions came from Steve Watson and Ross Geary, both with 10, and Robyn's brother, James, who made 22. Sam Bibby took 3-47 for Dringhouses II.

Despite an opening partnership of 47 between Geoff Smith with 22 and Gary Wilson with 26, the Carlton Towers attack was always in control and secured victory in the penultimate over.

Robyn Still capped a tremendous debut, taking 2- 9, whilst David Squires took 3 -34 and Ross Geary 4-30.

Robert Clayton was outstanding in the field and although Will Brown, who took five wickets last week was unable to take a victim, he bowled well to protect the Carlton target.
