Two draws, reserves sweat on promotion
Epworth Town 1
Swinefleet F.C. 1
Both first and second teams of the respective clubs were playing each other on an afternoon more suited to cricket than football at Epworth on Saturday.
The first team came away with a well deserved point against a side boasting the former Hull City, Coventry City, Hibernian and Goole AFC winger Leigh Jenkinson.
And playing at left back, a role he also played in for the Vikings, he was given a torrid time by Lee Burnitt, who never is a respecter of past reputations.
In fact it was Burnitt who put the villagers ahead after 18 minutes following a fine move starting with Wayne Sykes in central midfield and also involving Sam Nicholls, who provided a quality run and cross from the left and the scorer steamed in at the far post.
Swinefleet survived two scares during the first half, with Epworth hitting the woodwork twice from long range.
In the second half the five-man Swinefleet midfield enjoyed a lot of possession and with Sammy Woad mastering most things at the back they looked to be heading for a win, but after Dale Noon and Lee Burnitt both missed chances to extend the lead, Epworth equalised when Matty Burnitt, who saved a fine shot superbly, was then unlucky to see the rebound followed up by Ellis for the equaliser.
The final game of the season is at BBM tomorrow evening, Friday.
Epworth Town Res. 3, Swinefleet Res. 3
The second team were guilty of squandering a two-goal advantage in a match which would have seen them automatically promoted had they won, as nearest rivals Jailhouse could only manage a draw in their game.
First-half goals from Martin Hill and Andrew Severn put them in a commanding position before the home side pulled a goal back five minutes before the interval.
After the break, Epworth scored two more goals to put them in front before Jack Howard levelled matters thirteen minutes from time.
There was still drama to come tough seven minutes from the end with the referee awarding a penalty to Swinefleet then changing his mind to a free kick, and then disallowing the goal scored by Howard from the set piece on the advice of the home side's linesman,
Their final match was at home to league champions Mallard last night, Wednesday needing at least a point to secure promotion.
