Second seaside final is reached
Viking Raiders 5
Hodgsons 2
Vikings progressed to their second cup final of the season with a victory over Division 2 side Hodgsons.
The home side started brightly and knocked the ball around well in warm but windy conditions.
They had already missed a couple of good chances when Adam Sharp put them ahead after fifteen minutes with a deflected strike from the edge of the area.
Hesitant defending let in the visitors' striker soon afterwards, and he was tripped in the area. The referee awarded a penalty, and the spot-kick was converted with ease.
However, Raiders were ahead again shortly after, Chris Lattimore cutting in from the right and sending a superb shot past the keeper.
Yet for a second time the Beverley side were given a lifeline with a carbon copy of their first equaliser - same defender, same striker, same decision and same result.
Raiders were ahead again within 30 seconds of the restart. A hopeful ball forward should have been gathered by the keeper, but he allowed it to slip under his body, giving Sharp the easiest of finishes.
Tom Bryan made it four with a glancing header from a corner, and after Hewson had made a fine save for the Vikings, Lee Gelder completed the scoring with a well-placed chip over the stranded keeper for his first of the season.
Credit must go to Hodgsons for a fine battling performance, but in the end the Premier Division side were too strong and deserved their place in their second final, three weeks after winning the Senior Cup against Howden Amateurs.
The cup final will take place this Saturday, once again at Queensgate, Bridlington with a 4pm kick-off, their opponents will be Hull-based side Wawne Ferry.
Players to meet at 1.30pm at the Vikings.
It is the second of a 'double-header' cup final day at the ground with Cliffe F.C. from just outside the Goole Times readership area, in the Harold Robinson Memorial Cup final, kick off 1pm.
