Minis take to the stage
Goole U7s entertain Castleford U7s
In windy but bright conditions, Goole Minis took centre stage playing hosts to a keen Castleford squad.
In the first game, Goole came out fighting with a great display of aggressive tagging the minute the game started.
The whole team should take credit for their defensive improvements on the day. Castleford did get through the defence to score on five occasions but Goole were by far the more energetic and disciplined team.
There was powerful and decisive running from Jake Smith, Evan Blyth, Josh Clarkson and Connor Newbitt, backed up by superb support play from Sam Patrick and Kyle Turner. Bradley Clarkson and Nathan Earl kept the defence and attacks solid and Castleford began to run out of ideas in attack.
The final score was 7-5 to Goole after an impressive series of scoring from Jake as well as Evan, Connor and Josh.
The second match was a similar story. Jake attacked and scored relentlessly for Goole with excellent team play from James, Josh, Sam, Elliot, Travis and William.
They all played good attacking rugby which kept the scoreline positive for Goole despite all that Castleford could throw at them. Half time saw Evan and Connor coming on and both scoring valuable tries after more faultless work from their team mates. Castleford struggled all day against the Goole defence and the result was a resounding 7-4 victory.
This was a fantastic display from everyone who played - superb defence, faultless attack and a display of team work which will serve well in future matches.
Under 8s also at home
A good sized crowd witnessed some fine games of tag rugby at Westfield Banks.
Goole Under 8s opened their account against Selby "A" and showed why they are a team in form. There were some outstanding performances during the game, but the manner in which the boys played as a team was more pleasing.
With confidence oozing, Jack Hancock equalised an early Selby try following some quick hands from the team.
Goole were effective with the tags with Mason Kirby and Lawrence Marwood dominating in the middle as Goole turned over the ball repeatably.
The outstanding George Ounsley left the opposition for dead as he scored three tries, which was followed by another from Robson Jones. The match ended with William Broadley scoring two late tries, which gave Goole a resounding 7-2 win.
The match against Castleford was more evenly matched. Castleford played with flair and strength, but it was Goole who took the game by the collar and pressed hard for the opening score from the fine Robson Jones.
The first half saw Goole take control with further scores from George Ounsley and Oliver Raynor to go in 3-1 at half time.
The second period saw Castleford attack the Goole flanks. The pressure was rewarded with two early tries which brought Goole back to life. Josh Smith constantly drove the attack on and Lawrence Marwood showed his strength running deep into the defence. Both players were a constant menace breaking up play and denying space.
Castleford took a surprising lead, before William Broadley broke free to equalise in the final minute for a 4-4 draw.
This was an excellent game which brought out the best in both teams.
In the last game against Selby "B", Goole again dominated the proceedings. Harvey Blyth weaved his magic as he made ground on numerous occasions.
The boys tagged fiercely in the middle with Jack Hancock and Robson Jones were key in many of the moves. Oliver Raynor worked tirelessly, driving forward as he hurt the defence with his deceptive runs.
The tries were scored by Robson Jones (2), Harvey Blyth, Oliver Raynor and a superb sprint from George Ounsley. But the man of the morning William Broadley scorer of three marvellous tries led the team to victory in a 8-4 win.
Well done all players, who were magnificent all morning.
