Ryan leads the Vic goal spree
Division One
George Renegades 0, Victoria Rangers 9
Rangers ran out easy winners in Sunday's Goole and District Division One clash at West Park against lowly George Renegades.
They started brightly, but missed good opportunities before eventually breaking through after 10 minutes when Ryan Mitchell's cross was volleyed home superbly by Jason Gibbon.
Rangers soon went two up when Lee Thompson made no mistake in hitting the back of the net with a fine finish.
Ryan Mitchell scored the third with a curling shot into the top corner, and he then made it four when he slotted home just before half time.
The second period continued in much the same way, and Rangers were soon on the scoresheet once more, with Mitchell rounding the keeper and shooting home for his hat-trick.
Mitchell was not finished either as he scored his fourth to make it 6-0.
Shane Woodall then found himself on the mark with a volley from the edge of the area.
Renegades never gave up, but when they did push forward Paul Sharp was to the fore with a couple of fine saves, before Rangers were back at the other end and Thompson's clever cross from the right found Simon Gardiner, who slotted into the bottom corner.
The final goal came from Jason Greaves when he burst into the area and coolly fired into the top corner.
And but for good goalkeeping from James Hewson, it might well have ended up in double figures.
The Mansfield Brewery Man of the Match for Rangers was awarded to Jason Greaves and Lee Thompson.
This Sunday, Rangers visit Canal Tavern in the last four of the Division One Cup, kick off 10.30am.
Division Two
AFC Goods Office 1, The Buffalo 0
The scoreline reflected how close these two teams are in Division Two of the Goole and District Sunday League, and in the end it took a second-half goal by the home side to settle the outcome and gain revenge for the defeat in Thorne earlier in the campaign.
There were limited chances in the early stages, with both sides giving little away, but the game opened up with the Goods Office closest to opening the scoring. Adam Cawkill volleyed wide from close range following a good cross from Andy Whittaker.
With the game now open, it also became a touch physical, playing into the hands of the home side with Stuart Slack, John Hudson, Chris McEwan and Dave Eastwood relishing the challenge and looking in good form.
However, the visitors showed why they were in second place on the day, and midway through the first half their striker burst through on goal, but luckily the shot hit the crossbar when it looked easier to score.
Dominic McMahon was also brought into action when he made a close-range save as the Thorne side dominated towards half time.
They should have been in front at the break, too, but McMahon made a superb save at full stretch to stop a spot kick after Andy Whittaker was deemed to have clipped the heels of the visiting striker.
The second half returned to the start of the first period with chances limited and both defences looked on top, however the deadlock was broken by the Goods Office when Matty Whittaker beat his marker, and found Cawkill, who atoned for his earlier miss with a left foot finish to match his instant control - a well-taken goal.
The introduction of new signing Terry Fallon helped the home side preserve their slender lead - with several heart stoppong moments.
John Hudson was voted the Man of the Match, shading it from several of his colleagues.
Frank Cawthorn Cup Round Two
Kings Arms 2, Drax Ath. 1
Kings Arms progressed to the next round of the Frank Cawthorn Cup after a 2-1 victory against Drax.
After beating the visitors in the Divisional Cup in their last game the Newport side were in confident mood despite the difficult weather conditions that the game was played in.
Kings Arms created chances from the start and were rewarded when Tomasz Labudda put Steve Whur through to open the scoring.
A goalkeeping error led to Drax getting a fortunate equaliser and at half-time the sides were level.
Steve Whur quickly scored his second goal as Kings Arms deservedly regained the lead early in the second half, and despite numerous chances the hosts couldn't build on their lead and the game finished 2-1.
Kings Arms' Man of the Match was Lee Harris, who was playing in his first game this season.
