Promise met by points haul
Goole RUFC U15s 57
Scunthorpe RUFC U15s 7
Goole U15s have been threatening to give someone a good hiding this season, but it has never quite come off as silly mistakes have cost them dear. However last Sunday, with a full squad to choose from, everything clicked and unfortunately for visitors Scunthorpe they were the right team at the wrong time.
From the kick-off Goole went on the attack, with Green taking the ball well and setting the ball up. A clever inside ball from Rhys Moore to Thornhill saw the mobile prop make a good thirty yards before being stopped. Goole re-cycled again and Moore chipped over the cover defence. An fortunate bounce saw Hoggarth gather the ball to crash over near the post. Moore added the simple conversion to give Goole a 7-0 lead.
The home side were playing great rugby, with both forwards and backs combining well. Good runs from Thornhill and Betridge making plenty of ground, but unfortunately, an injury to the Scunthorpe captain meant that he was in no position to carry on and he had to leave the field.
Goole went back on the attack and should have scored their second try. A great run by Hoggarth saw him go through a number of tackles. Centre Allen carried on the move well and fed his partner Shand. He made it over the line but then dropped the ball as he was about to touch it down. Fortunately for Shand, he had the opportunity to make amends soon after when a powerful run by Green and another by Thornhill saw Goole finish off a good handling move.
Whilst Goole were dominating both possession and territory they were not transferring this onto the score sheet and after 25 minutes a 14-0 lead seemed a poor return. However, they stuck to their plan of moving the ball at pace with Moore bringing in fullback Rich Binns and winger Binnington into the game, the latter making a series of good runs deep into Scunthorpe territory.
The next try was straight from the training ground as Allen worked a great runaround move with Betridge for the scrum-half to score near the posts. Moore added his third conversion to take the score to 21-0. The final score of the half involved Thornhill and Hoggarth bursting through the cover defence. From the resulting scrum Betridge charged down the attempted clearance kick and dropped on the ball to score. With Moore adding the conversion, Goole turned round 28-0 in front.
Goole made a number of changes at half-time, but with a full squad on display it did not weaken the side. They came straight back on the attack, with Stephens involved on a number of occasions. One of the changes from half-time made an immediate impact as Ryan Lamb took almost half the Scunthorpe side with him as he ploughed through their pack and then repeated this again not long after.
Scunthorpe managed a try themselves following a brief period into Goole's half as their speedy flanker raced in to score under the posts. However, normal service soon returned as Goole dominated the rest of the half, scoring further tries through Betridge and Lamb. A great all-round team try was finished off by Nick Moore after going through at least eight pairs of hands. The most deserved try of the day came from workaholic prop Thornhill, who was always on hand throughout the game. The fourth and final try came from Betridge in the dying minutes.
A great all-round team performance, with not a bad player in sight for Goole.
Stand-off Moore had his best game in a long time. Hoggarth and Lamb looked powerful in both attack and defence. Hooker Law could show the senior side a thing or two about throwing in at the line-outs.
On any normal day scoring four tries would get a player the Man of the Match award, unfortunately, for young Betridge he did this in the same game as Thornhill played the game of his young life and thoroughly deserved the accolade.
