ACTION FROM the Division One cuptie at Western Road, where George Renegades went down 3-1 against Victoria Rangers.

Division One Cup

Victoria Rangers 4, George Renegades 1

Rangers preserved their unbeaten record with a comfortable victory in Sunday's Division One cuptie with George Renegades at Western Road.

Although they were missing key players, Rangers were on the scoresheet in the second minute with Steve Williams firing home from Calvin Wheldrake's cross.

Although the Renegades played their part it was keeper Paul McMahon who kept them in the game, and Rangers also had two goals disallowed before Shane Woodall made it two with a header at the near post from Wheldrake's corner.

The second half followed a similar pattern, but Rangers were given a fright on the hour as the visitors pulled one back with a shot that could only be parried into the net by the keeper.

However, any hopes the Renegades had of causing an upset were ended with a fine goal from Lee Catterall, this after excellent work by Terry Fallon in breaking the offside trap.

And vicitory was completed with a fourth goal as Gary Jones escaped his marker and slotted home past McMahon.

A word for the Renegades who, although beaten, played their part in an entertaining cuptie.

The Mansfield brewery Man of the Match for Rangers was Calvin Wheldrake.

This Sunday Rangers travel to Thorne side White Hart with a 10.30am kick off.

Division Two Cup

Rising Sun 0, Green Dragon 4

Green Dragon continued their good start to the season, with another cup victory, this time in the Division Two Cup.

In a scrappy game, with conditions underfoot difficult to say the least, the Dragon comfortably edged past Thorne rivals the Rising Sun. For the majority of the first half there was very little between the two sides, and few chances to report. With the first half looking like finishing goalless, in-form Chris Davies picked up the ball 30 yards out and struck a unstoppable right-footed shot into the corner of the goal.

The second half starter brighter for the Dragon, and three goals inside the first 20 minutes settled the cup tie. Davies turned provider as his pass set up substitute Richard Silvester, who made no mistake with an excellently-placed shot.

Andrew Bembridge then carried on from where he left off last week with two more goals. Firstly, he broke down the left and calmly side-footed home, and then hit a speculative 40-yard shot which the Sun keeper somehow let through his grasp.

To the host side's credit they never gave in, but rarely troubled Tom Dudley in the Dragon goal. Before the end Davies hit a post with a left-foot volley, and Adi Cowan could have added to his team's tally.

All in all a good result for the Green Dragon, who return to league action this week against the same opposition., again it is a 10.30am kick off on the Toll Bar.

Victoria Hotel 1, Canal Tavern 9

Canal Tavern kept up their unbeaten start to the season by running out convincing winners in the first round of the Division Two Cup.

After a slow start kicking into the wind against a game Victoria side, Tavern got to grips on a small West Park pitch.

Stuart Cheerowbrier opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after a great through ball from Man of the Match John Freeborn.

Victoria quickly equalised through Troy Oldridge, who beat three defenders to net.

Soon Tavern were on top again after a 40-yard cross from Cheerowbrier curled around the Vics. goalkeeper.

This started a commanding 20 minutes from Tavern as the league's leading scorer Lee Pearson hit his 16th of the season.

Goals then followed from Daz Brown and a thunderous 25-yard strike from outstanding captain Craig Hampson on 42 minutes, although in the midst of all the mayhem the visitors were down to 10 men with Neil Walker dismissed for two yellow card offences.

John Freeborn finished the half with a storming run which left the Vics players looking on in amazement as he sent the keeper the wrong way.

Hampson slotted in another on 52 minutes and Cheerowbrier completed a hat trick on the hour. Tavern looked like they would settle for a nice easy last 20 minutes until John Freeborn was brought down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Would it be Craig Hampson to step up and complete his hat trick? No, it was the new striker Liam Beaumont who hammered the ball into the net!

Fine performances from Adam Atkinson, Lee Place and sub Andy Goddard shored the defence up in front of an outstanding Dave Green

A big thanks this week to Club photographer Mick Lee.

Bay Horse 4, Arcadia 2

After their 10-0 mauling at the hands of Arcadia last week, a change around in fortunes for the Bay Horse from the Doncaster area as they knocked the Goole club out of the Division Two Cup.

After a bright, if careless, start where missed chances were the norm for Arcadia, suddenly the easy game they may have been expecting turned the other way with two goals for the Bay Horse after 15 and 25 minutes.

Arcadia gave themselves some hope after a torrid half hour and reduced the deficit.

However those hopes faded as the home side were as strong in the second period, with two further goals in the opening 20 minutes of the half.

Newman and Martin, the latter as Man of the Match, tried to breathe some life into the Goole outfit and they did reduce the margin but it was far too late to make any real difference on the outcome.

Division Two

Cowick Cavaliers 2, Drax Athletic 2

From the start this game had its controversial moments, although not as bad as the outcome of cautions and sending offs warranted.

With just over five minutes played, a scuffle broke out between the Cowick defender and Drax player John Briggs which resulted in both players being sent off.

Neither team dominated play until a dubious penalty decision was given in favour of Cowick.

Kieren Miles, the Drax keeper, facing his second penalty in two games did just enough to unnerve the Cowick forward, whose well-struck spot kick cannoned against the bar.

Half an hour into the game a ball that appeared to have gone out of play - and despite the linesman flagging - was ignored by the referee and led to Cowick taking the lead.

Just before the break Stuart Harrison pulled Drax back equal with a superb little volley.

The second half continued in scrappy fashion until Cowick were awarded yet another penalty. This time there was no mistake and they took the lead.

This was how it stayed until fifteen minutes from the end, when James Morgan was put through to equalise for Drax.

More drama to come, though, as with five minutes remaining Cowick's number nine was shown a red card on top of the yellow given to him earlier and he was sent off.

Cowick battled bravely to hang onto a deserved point. Five yellow cards and three red in a game which neither side felt was deserved.

Elsewhere in the Division One Cup, Old Goole Veterans progressed with a narrow 2-1 win against Thorne Demi at South Park, and there was a good 3-2 win for Hatfield Woodhouse at White Hart in Thorne.

Meanwhile, in Division Two, an odd goal in seven victory for the Buchanan, who strengthen their position at the top, courtesy of a 4-3 win over Swinefleet Social.

In the Division Two Cup, Rawcliffe Bridge Club won a penalty shoot-out at Newport against Howden Minster to progress to the semi finals.
