Hat-trick settles clash of titans
Division One
Victoria Rangers 3, Thorne Demi 2
Andy Gill was the hat-trick hero for Rangers as they triumphed by the odd goal in five over the current league champions Thorne Demi at Western Road on Sunday morning.
The Goole side are making a determined assault so far to wrestle the title back from Demi, but they trailed after a quarter of an hour to a low shot into the bottom corner, this despite dominating possession.
Within seven minutes they were level when Jason Gibbon was fouled in the area, and Gill calmly slotted home from the spot.
Gill was to give Rangers the lead with a second spot kick, this after a defender was adjudged to have handled in the area.
Rangers worked hard upfront, and had the opportunities to increase their advantage, but the half-time score remained 2-1.
Gill had an effort cleared off the line early in the second half, and although Jason Greaves had had little to do for Rangers between the sticks, he kept his side ahead with a fine reflex save.
Ten minutes from the end Gill completed his hat-trick with a superb 25-yard shot which looked to have settled the outcome, and despite Phil Walton pulling one back three minutes from time, there was no dispute that Rangers deserved the points.
This Sunday they travel to Bramley side Unicorn F.C. in the third round of the West Riding FA Sunday Cup, kick off 11am.
Rawcliffe United 4,
Buchanan 3
The bottom-of-the-table clash at Rawcliffe went the way of the home side, despite not having a full squad to select from.
Two goals each for Eric Allan and Mickey Martin did the trick against a Buchanan side who never gave up, but in the end they now slip to the foot of Division One.
NUR 8, Windmill 1
On a wet and windy Sunday the match kicked off with the home side in a rush they quickly got into their stride, Kirk Swan on the left finding space to beat the keeper.
With most of the possession, it was surprising that the half finished with just the single goal, and the second half started much as the first, with NUR playing some lovely one touch football.
Within five minutes the game was over as quick goals by Swan and two for Dave Bussey put them out of sight.
Windmill were clearly shocked and could not cope with the home side's all-round play.
Swan missed a penalty, but within a couple of minutes completed his hat-trick.
Cocker was introduced and with his first touch found the back of the net with a cross-cum-shot.
Then, after a string of injuries, Pete Gregg got his first outing of the season and rose like a salmon to head home number seven, adding number eight too.
Division Two
Bay Horse 2, AFC Goods Office 4
The Goole side returned to league action with a depleted squad at Bentley based Bay Horse on Sunday, but were ahead in the opening minute with Jason Newman released by Saj Whitaker, and his pin-point cross was volleyed home by Andy Whitaker.
The home side saw plenty of the ball in response, but created few openings although Dom McMahon did make a good save to keep the Goods Office ahead.
Towards the half-hour mark the Goole side's midfield four started to dominate and Chris McEwan's 20-yard shot beat the keeper, but came back off the crossbar. The lead was eventually doubled five minutes before the break, with Chris Gilmartin showing skill and finesse to put Dave McMahon in on goal and he fired home.
Early second-half pressure from Bay Horse saw them pull a goal back after 50 minutes but, well marshalled by John Brown, the visitors responded to the threat of a comeback by increasing their advantage. Brown rolled back the years with a weaving run, a pass to Andy Whitaker and second-half substitute Andy Severn made it 3-1.
Bay Horse reduced the arrears once more, and they did threaten an equaliser before a counter attack involving Dom McMahon, Dave McMahon and Severn allowed Andy Whitaker to settle the outcome.
John Brown and Chris McEwan shared the Man of the Match award for the Goods Office.
The Buffalo 6, Kings Arms 4
A ten-goal thriller was the reward for the few supporters who watched this game, played in terrible weather conditions at Moorends.
Both teams' defenders struggled to cope with the conditions early on and league leaders Buffalo quickly took control of the game opening up a two goal lead.
As the first half continued, Kings Arms came back into the game and scored through a Paul Tough header, but Buffalo scored to make it 3-1 soon after on the break.
The visiting strikers were also causing the Buffalo defence serious problems and Steve Whur continued his good scoring record to make the game 3-2 at the break.
It was a similar story for the second half as numerous chances for both sides meant both keepers were kept very busy.
Three further goals for the Thorne team and Kings Arms goals from Andy Branton and Mike Dixon, made the final score 6-4 to the Buffalo.
King Arms Man of the Match was goalkeeper Carl Coates, who made a string of top-class saves.
