TOP 5 Power Tips with PGA Teaching Professional Matt Rumble at Spaldington Golf Centre

Today's Drivers are built for Power golf. Huge heads give us a larger sweet spot and lower spin rates. For club golfers, we no longer need to focus on caution and correctness on the tee. If you combine a more aggressive tee-game with the following five tips, you can take full advantage of modern technology.

Strengthen you grip position - Not Pressure

Put your higher hand more onto the top and your bottom hand more underneath. You should see 3-4 knuckles on the left hand as you look down.

At the top of the swing stay strong, let the clubface point more to the sky; use a full-length mirror (see below, 26-07-46 SU) to check this. Toe to the floor = open clubface and a slice. On the follow-through allow the clubface and your hands to rotate, like passing a rugby ball. This will provide a straighter shot.

Give it some serious practice time before you take it to the course. Changes to the swing and grip takes a lot longer to get used to.

Tee it high - Let it fly

When you sit the club behind the ball 2/3 should be above the top. Play the ball off your front big toe and sweep the ball away, don't chop down and across it. Try higher tee pegs and trust, watch it fly away. A sweeping angle of attack gives you less distance sapping backspin.

Dynamic Backswing

A genuinely dynamic backswing must contain the big muscles in your shoulders and back, combining with the swinging of the arms and STABILITY in the thighs.

Work on rotating your shoulder under your chin. It's old advice, but it's still true. Don't become robotic and keep a flow to your swing. If you get tense or start throwing yourself too hard at the ball, practice the above but with your feet together to get Power with stability.

Build a better TEMPO

To hit the ball a long way you need the club moving at it's fastest from knee to knee. The key is to rid yourself of the impulse to hit from the top of the backswing.

Long and flowing not short and tense. Don't hit at the ball, swing through it and keep the momentum going in the follow-through, wrap your hands round your neck, with a nice high finish.

Equipment

Clubface loft, shaft flex and ball spin rate make a powerful combination. The right blend can boost power; the wrong one can take it away. 95 per cent of club golfers have drivers with not enough loft and shafts that are too stiff. 12 Degree regulars and anti-slice drivers all the way! Get custom fitted, try them out and don't let your ego get the better of you. Playing a harder ball adds yardage instantly, the softer the ball, the more backspin you get, the shorter it goes.
