Wayward bowling costs Newport teams
Rudston and Kilham XI 172
Newport 1st XI 171-7
Newport firsts' run of three wins had taken them up to third place with games in hand on the sides above them, one of which was Rudston and Kilham, where they visited on Saturday.
It proved to be a very tight contest which Newport lost by the narrowest possible margin, failing by just one run to reach a target of 172.
The home side, batting first, soon lost their openers: Sharpe bowled by John Todd for four, and Blott caught at mid on by Richie Harrison off Andy Harrison for 15. Todd bowled Bower for a duck and Harrison had Bonnett well caught by Graeme Buffrey at mid wicket for 16.
When Steve Collins picked up two wickets, Rudston were struggling on 96-6, but Harrison was batting well and with good support from Knaggs with 15 and Slater 18, before Todd collected two more wickets, including Harrison for 68.
Rudston's all out total of 172 in the last over was a lot more than it should have been. Todd took 4-54, Harrison 2-30 and Collins 2-27.
Tight bowling from Beevers and Slater made Newport work hard for their runs in the first twenty overs. Steve Collins made nine before he was caught at point and Simon Gosney perished in a similar fashion for 22.
Meanwhile, Mark Ogram had struggled to middle the ball with a patient 18. Carl Wilson and Graeme Buffrey accelerated toward the total with a good stand before Buffrey was caught at mid off for 18 and Wilson was also caught off Slater for 48.
Andy Harrison and Danny Smith, struggling after a finger dislocation in the field soon went but Richie Harrison and John Todd with quick singles left seven needed off the last over, and three off the last ball but he could only manage a single was leaving Newport agonisingly one run short of victory on 171-7.
Beever with 4-63 was Rudston's best bowler and Newport took seven points from their second defeat of the season.
Newport 2nd XI 184, Hornsea 4th XI 186-6
Only six points separate the top six in Division Three, with Newport fifth with a game in hand. Last Saturday's visitors Hornsea were second to bottom so hopes were high but Newport's performance was substandard and they lost by four wickets.
Newport elected to bat and soon lost Steve Clarke bowled for one by Hazell, but Paul Tough and Randal Yates batted with confidence in a stand of 78 for the second wicket in 15 overs before Yates was caught at point for 42.
Tough made his first-ever half century before he was bowled by Styche for 50. Doug Harwood dominated a stand of 56 for the fourth wicket with Matthew Phillips, whose contribution was just a single. On 49, Harwood swung across a straight ball from Marson and was bowled and Newport then lost a further six wickets for just 17 runs to be all out for 184 in the 38th over. Marson took 5-35 in 11 overs.
Hornsea made a positive start with veteran captain Fraser and 15-year-old Cudmore making 92 in 22 overs. Matthew Phillips had Fraser caught at point by Carl Coates for 40.
Cadmore went on to a very impressive 50 before he was caught by Steve Clarke at deep square leg off Carl Morfitt for 52. Stead clubbed a quick 43 to put the visitors in sight of victory but then panic set in. Randal Yates had Stead lbw for 43 and John Exley whipped out two more batsmen.
A crazy run-out saw Hornsea slip to 178-6, but Andrews and Daniels kept their heads and a six off the first ball of the last over won the game for Hornsea. Too much wayward bowling and a couple of dropped catches proved costly for Newport. Exley with 2-29 was the most successful bowler.
Newport CC would like to thank the King's Arms, Newport for after-match hospitality.
