Newport 1st XI 100-5

Hull Zingari 3rd XI 98

Newport secured their first win of the season in what has been a stop-go start to the campaign.

After a couple of blank Saturdays and a heavy defeat, their bowling attack made the young Zingari side struggle against John Todd and Andy Harrison in Saturday's independent League game on home soil.

Harrison had Frankish caught behind by Mark Ogram for eight and Todd trapped Brown lbw for three.

Aziz joined opener Bowers and took the score to 39 before Aziz was lbw to Richie Harrison for seven. Zingari folded to 57-7 with Todd and Harrison taking two more wickets each, including the patient Bowers for 22, caught by a diving Andy Harrison at cover.

Zingari skipper Rich Bowers hit a quick 34 before he was bowled by a good delivery from Gav Branton which cut back from outside the off stump. The last wicket fell to Branton when Thorpe was stumped by Ogram for 10.

Zingari were 98 all out in the 37th over. Todd 3-28 and Harrison 4 - 29 were the best bowlers for Newport.

Newport did not make the best of starts losing Mark Ogram and Simon Gosney both bowled for seven and five respectively, but a quick 27 by Miles Kirk with six boundaries took Newport to 50. Kirk was bowled by Brown, but Carl Wilson with 24 took Newport near to their target before he was caught at mid off and although Graeme Buffrey was out for eight, Danny Smith and Andy Harrison steered Newport to victory without further mishap in the 24th over.

Newport took the maximum eighteen points and this week make the journey to Flamborough on the coast.

The seconds were left with a blank Saturday as Hessle thirds were unable to raise a side for their game in the Independent League.

Newport CC thank the King's Arms, Newport for after match hospitality.
