York 260, Carlton Towers I 238

Carlton Towers go into the last match of the season needing seven points to ensure survival in the First Division, having failed to take maximum points in their clash with York at Clifton Park by only 22 runs in an aggregate of 498.

The fixture list has turned out an interesting final round of matches, with four out of the bottom five Clubs playing each other, three of which are eligible for the final relegation berth.

York were able to exact revenge for their defeat at Carlton Tower earlier in the season, mainly due to a second-wicket partnership of 150 between Jason English and Mike Mortimer. English, despite being dropped on the score of 36, went on to make 128, whilst Mortimer made 86.

Ben Lamb and Luke Townsend ensured that the York target remained within reach, the Carlton Towers spin bowling attack taking nine wickets between them. Lamb bowled 19 overs, taking 5-90, whilst former Doncaster Town all-rounder Townsend took 4-59.

The Carlton Towers reply got off to a fine start, with the opening pair of Ian Leach and Paul Wright putting on 58 for the first wicket. This included a four-over blitz of 45 runs, with Leach making 39. He fell, though, being bowled by Tom Bartram for 49, followed soon after by the disappointing Abhay Sharma, who hardly failed to trouble the scorers.

Jamie Pocklington, currently lying third in the divisional batting honours as the top English batsman in the Division, set up his side for victory making 66 in a fourth-wicket partnership of 93 with Luke Townsend.

He, too, fell to Tom Bartram, who took five wickets on the day. This became the catalyst for the York success, though, as Townsend went for 43 and then Mark Holmes, who had made 26, was given out LBW, reducing the reply to 237-6.

With the last four wickets falling for only one run, Carlton Towers were left still in the relegation battle, 24 points clear of Osbaldwick, who play hosts to Goole Town and 10 of Pocklington, who visit the Fishpond Field in the last match.

Carlton Towers II 124-3, Wilberfoss II 123-9

Carlton Towers avenged their denial of victory last season against Wilberfoss II by securing an easy success by seven wickets, and could gain promotion with victory this weekend.

Martyn Denby and Steve Watson produced a first-wicket partnership of 90 as Carlton Towers took the points after only 29 overs.

Wilberfoss had batted first and went from 55-1 to 123-9. Des Healy made 24 whilst 13-year-old Tom Young showed his potential with 43. Steve Landers took 4-44. There were also fine bowling contributions from Calum Reilly, who took 1-8 in his six overs and Sean Morris, 1-18 from eight. Kevin Tate also made a fine debut, taking 2-14 from his late seven over spell.

Whilst the manner of the success was not sparkling, the points still had to be gaind. Steve Watson made 33 before he was caught, whilst Martyn Denby made an undefeated 59.

Going into the final match, third-placed Carlton Towers play fourth-placed Pocklington II. The prize is the runners-up spot in Division Six, so it is all to play for on Saturday.
