Viking Raiders 4 Thorne Town 2

Viking Raiders brought the curtain down on a successful season with a superb win in the Goole and Thorne Saturday cup final at Hatfield Main's ground on Friday night.

Having recently faded away in the title race and lost in two league cup semi-finals, which included a midweek 2-1 loss against Beverley, they were determined to end the season with some silverware and ran out deserved winners in the end.

Raiders started brightly and had already come close to scoring before Chris Lattimore hit a post with his shot.

Thorne took the lead against the run of play, the Goole side failing to clear their lines and Phil Walton's cross-cum-shot floated over Richardson into the net.

Vikings were soon back on level terms however, when Chris Lattimore chased a seemingly lost cause, robbed the keeper and squared the ball for Adam Sharp to fire home from ten yards out.

The Thorne keeper redeemed himself with a superb save from Marshall's volley, and also saved well from Josh Giles as Raiders turned up the heat.

Thorne's best spell came early in the second half, and they retook the lead a second time with a Greg Daniels goal, and almost stretched their lead soon after, but Chris Richardson made a fine 'one-on-one' save.

Again Raiders equalised, this time following a corner and an almighty goalmouth scramble, James Chafer turned the ball in from close range, but they were to lose their striker soon after was carried from the pitch with a serious injury, later confirmed to be a broken ankle. All involved wish him a speedy recovery.

Raiders took the lead with fifteen minutes remaining, Ashley Lattimore breaking away and although the keeper got hands to the Raiders' captain's shot, he could not prevent it from going in, the assistant referee confirming that the ball had crossed the line.

Thorne pushed three men forward in an attempt to draw level, but the defence of Turner, Atkinson, Jackson and Bryan held firm, and when Ash Lattimore chipped the keeper in the dying seconds the game was made safe, and the Goole side could celebrate a well-deserved victory.

All players and management associated with the team would like to thank the Vikings Hotel and various sponsors for their generous support throughout the season.
