Viking Raiders progressed to the semi-finals of the Senior Cup with a narrow victory over fellow Premier Division side Boothferry Rangers at windy Western Road on Saturday.

Having twice beaten their Hull-based opponents comfortably in the league this season, Raiders started as favourites, but it was clear from the opening minutes that this was going to be no easy game.

The visitors had the better of the first twenty minutes and forced the Goole side to defend watchfully, but as the game wore on Vikings threatened more. Rangers' keeper made one incredible save from Mark Turner's close-range header, but from the resulting corner Ashley Lattimore beat the keeper with his curling dead ball kick to put the Vikings ahead.

Soon afterwards the Hull side lost their keeper to injury after a strong challenge from Matt Walker, and were forced into an emergency substitution. On the stroke of half-time Boothferry rattled the crossbar with a well-struck free-kick, but went in at the break a goal behind.

The second half was difficult for Vikings, playing into a strong wind, but the back three of Atkinson, Halford and Turner were again outstanding, and with the exception of one excellent save, Chris Richardson was rarely called into action. Both Adam Sharp and Chris Lattimore had several good chances to make the game safe, but could not beat the stand-in keeper.

In the last few seconds Raiders were almost made to pay when Boothferry's main striker swivelled and hit a crisp volley from the edge of the area, but again the crossbar came to the rescue and Vikings held on for a place in the last four. Mark Turner was awarded Man of the Match.

Another quarter-final this week for Vikings, this time in the H.E. Dean Cup against Sculcoates Amateurs. Raiders also face Howden at The Ashes in a league game on Tuesday evening.
