Mavericks look set for the Premier Division title

Published on 8th February 2007 in Sport

The value to the Goole Pool League of Victor Erwin has been heavily highlighted by his recent illness, however we are happy to report he's up and running again and this column can continue.

At the top of the Premiership the two teams heavily handicapped have proven difficult to dislodge, indeed Johnny Kidd's Middle House Mavericks, look to have the title won.

A 6-4 victory over Buchanan Badstars owed much to the form of John Turner who has proved a revelation on his debut season in the Premiership. Second placed Creykes Crusaders have also maintained good form but met their match this week with a 7-3 defeat at the hands of Packet Punters.

Shipmates are the main threat to the top two and with Pip Schofield in top form this year could yet cause an upset. A tight game away at Vic Club Dynamos ended 6-4 to the Goole club. The Verm have seen their title hopes fade but they are a top side and if they can hold their team together will be one to watch for in the summer season.

A 6-4 victory over a young Peacock Pirates saw Gordon Gaughan at his very best. Peacock Vagabonds have lost their way somewhat but were still too good for Creykes Tigers, winning 6-4 despite Gary Duffy's winning two frames for the Rawcliffe side.

Marshland Menaces sit proudly at the top of Division 1 having demolished a demoralised Shipwrecks side 8-2. The Swinefleet side looked to be heading for a whitewash until wins for Terry Gosling and Bob Crossley put the brakes on somewhat.

Victoria Con-Vics also looked to be heading for a drubbing a NUR Clubbers turned in a stunning first half performance. However, the Vic lads are made of strong stuff and reversed the scores in the second half to earn a 5-5 draw.

A surprise result saw second-placed NUR Neanderthals held 5-5 by Royal Raiders, Richard Holgate's two frames against top opposition proving a key factor. Middle House Massive are the champions of the 6-4 result in either winning or losing by that score endless times.

This time they were the victors over Royal Oak Saints thanks to Jamie Morritt's continued good form. Unbelievably, Sam Curly recorded two wins on Verm Vultures team sheet although further investigation reveals she had no opposition to face as opponents Packet Panthers could only field four players in a 7-3 defeat.

A rare whitewash for Middle House Lasses at the hands of Rawcliffe Bridge should not defect them from the progress the girls have made this year, they have some good players in their ranks and have undoubtedly proved pool is not just a man's game! Two solid frames from Bob Johnston, a premiership player hiding away in division two, enabled Vic Marksmen to gain a 5-5 draw at Woodland Wombles. Wayne Jackson and Steve Cawthorne were the form players for the Wombles with two frames each.

Big Mac continue to dismay, going from 2-0 up to a 7-3 defeat at the hands of close neighbours Royal Flush, despite two very good wins from Jeff Hayes. Marshland Wanderers followed up their cup success with a somewhat closer 6-4 victory over North Eastern Pumas.

In a game that could have gone either way, wins for Lee Philpott and Chris Brown in the last two frames gave the Old Goole team victory. North Eastern Tigers recovered from 3-1 down to take the final six frames to turn the game on its head and get a 7-3 victory. Steve Hague again the catalyst.

The monthly captain's meeting will be held at the Peacock at 8pm this Thursday. League tables will be available and relevant draws will be made. All captains must attend.
