Good day in Goole and Thorne Cup
Goole and Thorne Cup
Hatfield Woodhouse 0, Canal Tavern 1
The Canal Tavern continued their winning streak with a hard-earned victory on a cold and windy morning down at Jubilee Park Hatfield.
The match got off to a bizarre start when after only three minutes the leagues leading goal-scorer Lee Pearson left his foot in while challenging for the ball and was immediately red-carded by the referee.
This left manager Mark Sheppard with a major headache and a mountain to climb, but he could not have a had a better response from his ten men. Led by captain Craig Hampson and Rory Bremner 'lookalike' Adam Freeborn, the Tavern's midfield bullied the home side for the rest off the game and it was Freeborn who went closest in the first half with a header that just went by the far post as the goalkeeper was left stranded.
The Tavern went close again to scoring as ex- Hatfield player Sean McCarthy skinned the right back and put Daz Brown through, only to see his effort balloon over the bar.
The second half went much the same as Hatfield looked overawed at the power of the Tavern youngsters and the breakthrough that finally won the game came on the hour as Daz Brown was put through by Adam Freeborn; he rounded the keeper to slot the ball into an empty net.
The crowd went ballistic and several supporters were asked to leave the pitch by the referee. When Freeborn, Patrick and centre-half Lee Place came off, substitutes Kevin Hames, Adam Atkinson and Stewart Cerrowbrier soon got into the games and ran the midfield. Tavern were the only team that looked like winning this game but were quite releived as the referee blew the final whistle to end a very curious game. A big thanks to all supporters and to Ian and Yvonne at the Tavern.
Next week home to Drax Athletic (at the Moorends Recreattion Ground.
Green Dragon 3, Tadcaster Arms 1
Green Dragon produced a tremendous cup performance to oust Doncaster Premier Division side Tadcaster Arms out of the Goole and Thorne Sunday Cup, and in doing so booked their place in the semi finals.
The Dragon started the game in confident form, after their last couple of victories, and went straight at the opposition from Armthorpe. But despite the early pressure, it was the away side that opened the scoring, capitalising on some disappointing defend-ing from a corner.
Green Dragon hit straight back, and Andrew Bembridge hit the bar from a corner, before equalising after Chris Davies had headed on a Dave Howe free kick.
The home side had much more of the play at this stage with Man of the Match Ryan Stewart with some crunching tackles in the midde of the park, and winning more than this fair share of headers. despite only being four feet tall.
Gary Woods was also excelling in the middle of the park, until his daft challenge gave Tadcaster the chance to re-take the lead from the penalty spot. But the Dragon weren't going to be beaten easily, and keeper Tommy Dudley pulled off a great penalty save. This spurred the Dragon on, and almost immediately took the lead. Howe's free kick again caused havoc in the Tadcaster Arms defence and Tony Hurrel was in the right place to feed on the scraps to make it 2-1 at half time for the home side.
The second half was all about the guts and determination shown by the Dragon. Lesser sides would have buckled under the pressure on the Dragon, but excellent defending by Dave Howe, Michael Ryan and Ray Marks, backed up by the excellent Dudley in goal, kept the score at 2-1. All three defenders made crucial goal-line clearances.
The Dragon still looked dangerous on the break and sealed the cup tie with 10 minutes remaining. Bembridge surged down the right and his cross shot was parried by the away keeper, and with delight Hurrel made no mistake with the rebound.
A great win for the Dragon, who now turn their attention back to the league, and a very important fixture against the improving Arcadia. Players meet at the Rec at 9.30am, kick off 10.30am.
And in the other tie featuring a Goole league side, Thorne Demi accounted for Doncaster Alliance League team Wheatley Hotel to progress.
Division One
George Renegades 1, NUR 4
The game went ahead after a pitch inspection and NUR scored probably the fastest goal of the season in Sunday football.
It came straight from the kick off against hosts George Renegades at West Park as the home defender tried to be clever and gave possession away to Moore, who coolly tucked the ball home.
There was constant pressure from NUR, but countless chances went begging until Eastwood drove down the left and supplied a deep cross for Swan to steal in unnoticed at the back post.
The second half saw the visitors continue to dominate, with Moore's pace a constant source of worry. Eastwood also roamed with freedom and a third goal had to come, and it was Moore on target as he took another pass by Eastwood to go on and beat the keeper.
NUR's final goal of the morning came when Pollard brought down Potter and Eastwood scored from the resulting spot kick.
The George scored a consolation with ten minutes remaining as a shot hit Taylor and swerved into the back of the net.
Elsewhere, Old Goole Veterans kept their hopes of the title in the balance with a 10-0 win over Rawcliffe United at South Park.
