Play-off will determine Division One champions

Published on 17th August 2006 in Sport

A play-off at Goole Conservative Club last night (Wednesday) took place to determine the destiny of the Division one title in an exciting climax to the season.

Leaders before last week, Middle House Mavericks, were shocked as Creykes Crusaders achieved two 8-2 wins on the same night to claw back the deficit and equal their points tally.

Con-Vics could only sit and watch as their own premier Division hopes vanished.

Elsewhere, Stef Walker?s recent good form came to an end against his old team Big Mac, winning a close game 6-4.

Verm Vultures also won by the same margin against the Royal Family with Danny Preece in hot form once more.

Another 6-4 scoreline saw the Middle House Massive beaten by the Packet Panthers, who came back from 4-3 down to finish with a flourish. Emma Longster and Jamie Fox starred.

In the Premier Division, where the championship was won by Peacock Pirates last week, There was still a shock in store for the Peacock Vagabonds with second place snatched away by Creykes Tigers, who won 7-3.

Kev Morrell?s frame wins over Paul Fox and Martin Thompson provided the foundation for the win, but licensee Ron Crossley?s frame win over Des Lancaster, this year?s outstanding player, sealed the Goole side?s fate.

Vic Club Dynamos? new-look side took third place, winning fifteen of their last seventeen games and their 8-2 victory over North Eastern Cheetahs showed how good a side they are. Praise to Andy Hurson, who has rebuilt his team well after losing so many players.

Shipmates were without star men Hodgson and Clark, but managed to squeeze past the Buchanan Badstars with Kirk Swan and Paul Moffatt at the peak of their game.

Con Vets? Linda Bean scored her first victory of the summer season in a 7-3 defeat of Middle House Lasses in Division Two. Playing at No. 10, Linda?s win came in the last frame of the season.

Woodland Wombles? report card this season reads ?Could do better?.

A 5-5 draw at home to Vic Marksmen was a decent result, but their form has been in and out throughout. The Marksmen?s Vince Mason achieved the coveted seven-ball clearance.

The top two teams in this division met, with the Shipwrecks unable to catch N.U.R. Clubbers, and it was pride only at stake with Terry Gosling and Bob Crossley turning on the style to inspire the Swinefleet side to a narrow 6-4 win.

A feature of this game was Gary Longfield?s two defeats to Greg Chappell and Crossley, this after only losing two frames previously all season. The Presentation night takes place next Wednesday, August 23 at the Middle House.
