'Vic' and 'Vets' share spoils at Parkside
Division One
Victoria Rangers 1, Old Goole Veterans 1
A share of the spoils in Sunday's heavyweight clash in Division One of the Goole and District Sunday League between the winners of the title in the last four seasons.
Victoria Rangers, the current champions, edged the first half of the game with Old Goole Veterans at Western Road and took the lead when Shane Woodall scored from the penalty spot after Jason Gibbon was hauled down by the keeper. The only surprise was that the referee kept his card in his pocket against the Vets' No. 1.
And it was the keeper who kept his side in the game with several fine saves as Rangers continued on top.
It was much the same after the break, so it was a surprise that the Vets found an equaliser with a soft goal which beat Mark Welsh, who then made a great save to deny the Old Goole side from taking the lead.
Both teams strove for the winner, and on balance perhaps Rangers shaded matters, but the points were shared.
The Mansfield Brewery Man of the Match for Rangers went to Gary Jones.
NUR 3, Hatfield Woodhouse 1
On an uneven surface, the NUR started strongly in their Division One game with Hatfield Woodhouse on Sunday morning.
They thought they had taken an early lead when Matty Eastwood scored with a towering header, only for a late offside flag to frustrate them.
However the home side continued with their good football and they got their rewards eventually with a cross by Kirk Swan met by Braithwaite and the keeper was left helpless.
However, the celebrations did not last long as the visitors scored an equaliser to level things up at the break.
NUR pushed a further man forward in the second half aware the points were there for the taking.
After an hour, a cross by youngster Moore saw Swan reach the ball before the defender to make it 2-1.
Shortly after, young Jo Burnitt made it 3-1 and the points were sealed, and there was even time for the miss of the season from player manager Burnitt as he rounded the keeper but shot wide with the goal gaping.
Marshland Wanderers 2, Vikings 7
Vikings maintained their unbeaten run in Division One with a convincing 7-2 win at Marshland on Sunday at Kent Road.
They started the game slowly, but soon took control with excellent work in the midfield from Giles and Whiteley setting up Maundrill to open the scoring.
And they continued to dominate for the rest of the half with further goals, both created by Tom Bryan.
Marshland managed to pull a goal back before the break to remind them the game was far from over.
However, early in the second half a fourth goal gave them more breathing space and although Wanderers did respond to make it 4-2, the introduction of Dave England worked well for the visitors and enabled Giles to complete a hat-trick. Dodson and Franks added further goals.
The referee's Man of the Match for Vikings went to Tom Bryan, and the club would like to thank Matty and John at the Vikings for their support.
Division Two
Drax Athletic 1,
Howden Minster 1
Howden Minster came to Drax expecting a landslide victory but left lucky to go away with a point.
The first half was exciting at both ends, with Drax causing several goalmouth scrambles and but for a keeper in excellent form in the Howden net they might have gone in losing.
Against the run of play Minster played yet another boring long ball for their two forwards to chase and this time they got the benefit of the bounce, leaving Jamie Hunt despite a brave effort picking the ball out of the Drax net.
The second half started very strongly, with Drax in control and continuing to maintain the attack on the Minster net.
Eventually it happened. After a beautifully-worked set-piece the Drax captain Richard Green headed in the equaliser. Despite this neither team was able to find the final blow and it finished in a draw. The referee was excellent and the match played totally in the spirit of the game without him having to have as much as a word with any players on either team. Nice to see.
Drax travel to Swinefleet on Sunday looking to boost their confidence in the build-up to their continued cup run on the 21st.
Green Dragon 4, Cowick Cavaliers 0
Green Dragon started the New Year with a comprehensive victory over Cowick Cavaliers. The game was over as a contest at half time as the Dragon scored four quality first-half goals.
Glen Hookway scored the first, from 30 yards, that looped in over the Cowick keeper, and Andrew Bembridge made it two with an unstoppable shot from a very acute angle.
With the central midfield trio of Ryan Stewart, Gary Woods and Chris Davies dominating the midfield battle, the game was all one-way traffic, and the third goal soon came. Hookway and Bembridge were again involved to set up Adi Cowan, who fired the ball into the bottom left corner.
Greg Houseman made it four just before half time, firing home from 25 yards plus and setting up a great cross-field pass from Cowan.
After the break the game was a more even affair, with neither side creating too many chances. The Dragon back three of Ray Marks, Nick Worth and Dave Howe coped well with everything that was thrown at the them, and Tommy Dudley as always swept up superbly in the Dragon goal.
Another good team performance from the Dragon, who travel to Newport this Sunday to take on Howden Minster.
Players to meet at Dragon at 9.30am prompt.
Swinefleet Social Club 1, Canal Tavern 6
The Canal Tavern kept up their impressive form in the league as they swamped Swinefleet with an emphatic win.
The Tavern, against a cold wind in the first half at South Park were quickly on top though as Sean McCarthy met a Daz Brown cross to put the unbeaten side ahead after only eight minutes.
Brown made it 2-0 seven minutes later, cutting through the home side's defence to ram the ball home.
After a rare attack by the hosts, Tavern keeper Lee Peate went route one and Lee Pearson headed through to Brown and he coolly beat the oncoming keeper to make it 3-0.
The league's leading scorer Lee Pearson made it 4-0, dribbling round the home side's defence to score.
In the second half manager Mark Sheppard rang the changes as Stewart Cheerowbrier, Adam Freeborn and captain Steve Patrick were brought off and Liam McCarthy, Kevin Hames and Craig Hampson were introduced.
The changes made no difference as Jed McCormack fed Lee Pearson who made it 5-0 with a 25 yard curler leaving the Swinefleet keeper stranded.
The home side looked increasingly despondent as on 67 minutes Kevin Hames ran through their defence to put Daz Brown through and he rounded the keeper to make it 6-0.
Swinefleet fought back and scored a consolation goal near the end after sloppy defending, but it was not enough to stop the league leaders comfortably taking the three points yet again.

Victoria Hotel 0, Rawcliffe Bridge Club 2
A tired-looking Victoria Hotel turned in a disappointing performance as the league's bottom club at Christmas made a fine start to 2007 with their first win.
Hawley started the move for the visitors' first goal, passing inside after making ground at a throw and Barker fed Sutton, who in turn found Stannard to deliver a ball for Lester to score.
Hawley almost scored Rawcliffe's second, but a scrambling Vic defence managed to block his goalbound effort.
After the break the Rawcliffe manager thought the best way to win the match was to play in the opponent's half - and that is what happened.
The home side were disappointing for the most part and it was no surprise when Rawcliffe scored a second through a solo effort by Stannard, who left two defenders for dead and netted.
Vic Hotel did rally near time but to no avail, and the only sour point in the game came near the end when Barker went for a diving header by Andy Gray and ended with a broken nose.
Thanks to Tex Williamson for standing in as referee.
