Street naming honour planned

A new street should be named after Goole's favourite fundraiser, town councillors said at Monday's meeting.

They were asked for their views on a new development by Ben Bailey Homes off Maple Walk and firmly rejected the proposed name - 'Pecan Close.'

"It's totally alien to anything in Goole," said Cllr Pat O'Neil.

Instead, councillors were enthusiastic about naming the new road 'Olive Close' after the late Olive Hunt MBE, in recognition of all her charity work for the town.

"The town council was the original nominator of Olive for an MBE and obviously we would be very pleased to remember her this way," said town clerk Brian Robertson after the meeting.

"I hope the East Riding will adopt it."

Mr Robertson also pointed out that olive in the sense of an olive tree would fit in well with the streets around it, which are also named after trees.

Olive, known by her many friends as Olly, worked tirelessly to raise money for charity and started the ever-popular Community Store in Edinburgh Street.

Sadly, Olly lost her battle with cancer earlier this year and passed away on May. A street would be a permanent reminder of a cherished fundraiser.

A spokesperson for Ben Bailey Homes said there would be "no problem" with calling the 45-house development Olive Close.
